FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of Southern Maine softball team rode pitching performances from Melissa Henderson and Katie Mainville and cranked out 25 hits over two games to sweep D’Youville College of Buffalo, N.Y., Monday.
Southern Maine downed D’Youville 9-1 in the first game and the then pounded out eight runs in five innings to shut out D’Youville 8-0 in the second.
In the first game, Henderson struck out 15 batters while giving up only one hit and allowing no walks to lead the Huskies. Christen Lachapelle doubled and singled, while Caterina Riitano and Kim Lipman had two RBI apeice.
Hilary South belted a home run for D’Youville’s only run.
In the second game, Southern Maine’s Mainville pitched a shutout with seven strikeouts and no walks, while limiting D’Youville to three hits. Lachapelle had a triple, single, and an RBI. Riitano and Lipman had a double, single and RBI each.
