Brewer sparks Huskies

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Brandon Brewer hit a three-run homer in the third inning and added two singles to help lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies past John Carroll University 6-1 in baseball action Tuesday.

Eckerd College beat USM 21-12 Monday night.

In Tuesday’s game, Max Arsenault hit a solo home run in the sixth and singled for the Huskies. Eddie Skeffington doubled and tripled to knock in a run and Andrew Portwine doubled and singled.

In Monday night’s game, Craig Albernaz singled three times and drove in two runs to lead Eckerd College to the win.

Ryan Bourque hit a three-run double in the eighth inning for the University of Southern Maine. Nick Vardaro and Joe McGhee each had three singles.

Southern Maine splits

At Fort Myers, Fla., Melissa Henderson gave up just one run on four hits and no walks while striking out nine to give the University of Southern Maine a 3-1 win over Buffalo State College in the opener. Buffalo State won the second game 1-0.

In the first game, Danica Martin singled twice for the Huskies and Caterina Riitano drove in two runs.

In the second game, Emily Goldyn hit a two-out triple to drive in the winning run for Buffalo State. Kristin McGovern hit two singles for Southern Maine.
