Canadian sentenced on illegal-entry charge

BANGOR – A New Brunswick man was to be returned to Canada today after waiving indictment and being sentenced Tuesday

in federal court to 43 days in

jail, or time served, for entering the country illegally.

Gary N. Johnston, 25, of Rollingdam was charged last month in U.S. District Court in Bangor with illegal entry into the United States after having been refused entry. He was arrested on Feb. 16 at his wife’s residence in Calais.

Johnston told officials that he had walked across the border at the Milltown port of entry, according to court documents, after previously being denied entry three times because he was a felon.

Johnston is wanted in Saint John, New Brunswick, for a probation violation on an arson conviction, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Details about the arson were not available in federal court in Bangor.
