Ex-SAD 48 teacher faces sex abuse charge

SKOWHEGAN – A Somerset County grand jury has indicted a former SAD 48 teacher on charges of sexual abuse of a minor, stalking and criminal trespass relating to alleged conduct with a former student.

Richard Geenleaf Jr., 49, who now lives in West Gardiner, was charged with eight counts of abuse of minors that is alleged to have occurred between 2001 and 2003. At that time he was a social studies teacher and baseball coach at Somerset Valley Middle School in Hartland.

Greenleaf was arrested by the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department deputies in January as he stood in the driveway of a 17-year-old former student in Palmyra.

Police said Greenleaf had been harassing the girl. They also said there might be other victims in this case.

SAD 48 Superintendent William Braun could not be reached for comment.

Greenleaf is scheduled to appear in Somerset County Superior Court to enter a plea in the case at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 5.
