State Geography Bee

ORONO – The Maine State Geography Bee will be held Friday, April 1, at the University of Maine. Preliminary rounds will be held at 12:45 p.m. at Memorial Union, and the final round will be at 3 p.m. at Donald P. Corbett Business Building.

DAR Good Citizens

ORONO – Esther Eayres Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will honor DAR Good Citizens and AFS students during its next meeting at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 4, at the Church of Universal Fellowship on Main Street. For information, call 947-1979.

Bangor High School

BANGOR – Bangor High School senior Matthew Werrbach was awarded the Regional Incentive Grant from Hiram College. The grant provides $3,000 toward tuition.

Brewer High School

BREWER – Alyson Bates of Brewer, a senior at Brewer High School, recently won the state competition for Skills USA in culinary arts. She attends United Technologies Center in Bangor. The competition included students from 14 technology centers from around the state. She will compete in the national competition in June in Kansas City. UTC also had 26 other gold medalists in various other trades who also will compete at the national level.

Bates is the daughter of Keith and Rosanne Bates.

All-City Jazz Night

BREWER – The public is invited to join more than 75 musicians at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, in the Brewer High School gymnasium for an evening of music. Admission is $3, $2 for students. Children under age 10 will be admitted free. Refreshments will be available from the Brewer Music Association.

The Brewer High School Jazz Ensemble and Combo performed at the Berklee Jazz Festival on March 12 in Boston. Both groups placed in the top five in each category competing against schools from across the United States. Trombonists Nick Ault and Erik Rae each received outstanding musician awards.

Performing on Wednesday will be the Brewer Middle School Jazz Band, and the Brewer High School Jazz Combo, Jazz Choir, Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble.

Honor for Orono teacher

ORONO – Jessica C. Archer of Orono Middle School is one of 10 teachers who have been nominated for the 2006 Maine Teacher of the Year program.

The nominees were honored March 24 in a ceremony at the State House Hall of Flags in Augusta.

Archer teaches math, science and reading to seventh- and eighth-graders at Orono Middle School.

The selection process will include school visits, professional portfolio reviews, oral presentations and final interviews before the Maine Teacher of the Year is announced in September.

Challenger Center

BANGOR – The Challenger Learning Center of Maine will offer a space simulation mission open to the general public at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at the center.

Participants will experience space exploration as if they were a team of astronauts, scientists and engineers about to encounter a comet. The event is open to adults and students ages 10 and up. Students under age 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is $20, $18 students. Reservations are required. Call 990-2900.

Penobscot Christian School

BANGOR – Penobscot Christian School will hold its annual science fair for grades five through eight at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 31, at the school at 1423 Ohio St.

Spiritual Emphasis Week will be held April 4-8 at Penobscot Christian School. Pam Brady and Matt Huffman of Coastlands Consultants will conduct daily chapel services that challenge and encourage pupils and adults. Job Corps Homecoming

BANGOR – With preparations for a 25th anniversary Celebration-Homecoming under way, officials at Penobscot Job Corps Center are searching for former students and staff to take part in the April 1 event.

The day will begin at 2 p.m. with tours of the center at 1375 Union St. Guests participating in the tour are asked to check in at the Recreation Center.

Social hour will be 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Recreation Center. The main event will be 7:30-9:30 p.m. with student and staff guest speakers from the past and present, and a timeline of Penobscot Job Corps history through video, picture and slide presentations. Musical entertainment and staff skits also will be featured.

Guests may visit the alumni information booth to catch up on recent events and sign up to be included in the alumni contact list. Job Corp’s culinary arts department will cater the event with a cascading cruditee table of fruits, vegetables and cheeses. Hors d’oeuvres will be available 6:30-8:30 p.m. through the butler services of culinary arts students.

“It will be a fun-filled evening of reflection,” said event organizer and Job Corps teacher Mike Jellison.

Playschool open house

Daniel Webster College

NASHUA, N.H. – Melissa Jalbert of Newburgh and Ian Chase of Winterport have been named to the dean’s list at Daniel Webster College.

Chase is a freshman majoring in aviation flight operations. Jalbert is a freshman majoring in aviation-air traffic management.

Eastern Maine Community College

BANGOR – The Maine Community College System board of trustees recognized AAA Northern New England at a board meeting for its long-standing support of the AAA Northern New England Endowed Scholarship Fund. AAA recently donated $25,000 to the fund, created in 1999, bringing the total to $170,000. The fund supports scholarships for community college students enrolled in automotive technology programs.

Thomas Kinley, president and CEO of AAA Northern New England, presented $1,000 scholarships to three students enrolled at Eastern Main Community College: Alvin Wescott of Ellsworth, William Beyenberg of Stetson and Clay Randall of Brewer.

Johnson & Wales University

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Elizabeth Strout of Bangor and John Garrity of Old Town have been named to the dean’s list for the winter term at Johnson & Wales University.

Shawn Byron of Bangor has been named to the dean’s list for the winter term at Johnson & Wales University at the campus in North Miami, Fla.

Maine Maritime Academy

CASTINE – Maine Maritime Academy will hold an open house for prospective students and their parents Saturday, April 9. Registration will take place in the Student Center from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. A continental breakfast and lunch are free to participants.
