BANGOR – Not only is Bangor International Airport feeling the need for more parking space. The City of Bangor plans to more than double the number of parking spots at the site of the airport’s new neighbor, an L.L. Bean call center that will occupy the former Irving Oil Co. building at the corner of Godfrey Boulevard and Maine Avenue.
The upgrade is part of the agreement the city is making with the internationally known outfitter to bring a call center to the Queen City. The center, the fourth year-round center for L.L. Bean, is expected to employ about 100 full-time, permanent workers and as many as 800 seasonally.
And that will mean a need for more parking.
No problem, according to Steve Bolduc, the city’s economic development officer and head of the BanAir Corp., the nonprofit agency that manages the city-owned property by the airport.
“We have plenty of room on that lot to expand parking,” Bolduc said.
Once the agreement with L.L. Bean is completed, city officials plan to expand parking at the facility by 300 spots for a total of about 568 parking spots. Bolduc said he anticipates having the work completed by the summer. L.L. Bean intends to move in by late summer or early fall. The cost of the project is about $250,000, although Bolduc said that is a preliminary estimate.
The property is part of the BIA Commercial Industrial Park that extends to Union Street and along the Griffin Road and includes the Unicel building, the Eldur Corp. building, state offices and the Spectacular Event Center.
More employees will increase traffic in the area, but Bolduc said traffic is already below what it could be in the area as six of the 22 lots in the park are vacant. If improvements in traffic flow are needed, the city will deal with it at the time, Bolduc said.
