Oakfield, Amity pass local budgets

OAKFIELD – The town manager who oversees two southern Aroostook County towns said Thursday that it was business as usual at each of the town’s annual meetings this year.

Darrell Williams, who is town manager in both Amity and Oakfield, said that about 25 people attended Amity’s recent meeting.

“We passed the budget, but we did cut it in some places,” he recalled Thursday. “The residents decided that they do not want to do any [road] paving this year.”

Voters were presented with a $115,077 municipal budget, but made the cuts after making the decision on the roads. The town was scheduled to do work on about one mile of the Lycette Road.

In other business, residents elected Glen Clifford to a seat on the Board of Selectmen, but did not have any open seats to fill on the SAD 70 school board.

In Oakfield, Williams said Thursday, the voters approved a $271,502 budget when they convened for their annual town meeting earlier this week.

“The budget does not yet contain what we will have to pay to the school,” the town manager explained, referring to Consolidated School District 9. “Last year, we had to pay about $324,00 to the school, so if that number stays the same, we are looking at a budget of about $595,000.”

About 58 people showed up for the event, and residents elected Cathy Briggs to a seat on the Board of Selectmen.

Brad White and Danny McNally were both elected to vacant spots on the CSD 9 board.

A one-year term on the CSD 9 board has yet to be filled, Williams said.
