INDIANAPOLIS – Portland’s Ian Crocker qualified for the U.S. world championships team on Monday without swimming a stroke.
USA Swimming, the sport’s governing body in the United States, announced all second-place finishers at the trials have been added to the U.S. team that will compete in Montreal in July.
Crocker, the world record holder in the 100-meter butterfly, finished just behind Michael Phelps in that event Sunday night. At the time, only the winner of each event was guaranteed a spot on the U.S. team.
Monday’s ruling gave the former Cheverus High swimmer another chance to go head-to-head against Phelps, who already had qualified for the U.S. team by winning the 100 butterfly and the 200 and 400 freestyles.
Phelps’ win in the 200 free also gave him a spot in the 800 freestyle relay, along with Ryan Lochte, Klete Keller and Peter Vanderkaay, the same foursome that won the gold medal at the Athens Olympics last summer.
