Bangor Youth Ballet

Bangor Youth Ballet will present “Swan Lake” at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at Peakes Auditorium, Bangor High School. Also featured will be “Teddy Bear Tea.”

Benefit fashion show

Spring into Summer Spectacular, a fashion show presented by Bangor Y Interact Leaders Club in collaboration with J.C. Penney, will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at Rangeley Hall on Sylvan Road. There will be live music, appetizers and a raffle.

Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit YouthAIDS organization. Tickets are $15 and are available at the Bangor Y, Second Street and Hammond Street locations. For information, call Nancy Cambridge, 941-2815.

The Bangor Y Interact Leaders Club receives support from the Bangor Area Breakfast Rotary Club.

Art exhibit opening

Thirty drawings and etchings by artist William Bailey, professor of art emeritus at Yale University, are on display through May 27 at Clark House Gallery, 128 Hammond St., Bangor.

The opening reception will be held 5-7:30 p.m. Friday, April 15.

Bailey’s work has been exhibited at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.

The artist does not use photographs or direct observation in his compositions. He said in 2003, “I wanted to place a figure in a context outside of time, that is, in a more abstract context.”

Bailey is a member of the National Academy of Design and the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters and a trustee of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation.

Author signing

Judy Koretsky, forensic investigator and California author of “Domino,” will speak at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at Bangor Public Library.

The novel is the second in her Dalton Keyes series of thrillers, featuring a U.S. marshal working in lonely stretches of desert, longing to avenge the death of a fellow officer.

Koretsky has 30 years’ experience as an expert witness in West Coast trials. Her books will be available for purchase and autographs.

Early childhood classes

The Penquis Community Action Program Resource Development Center will offer six hours of training in Building A Peaceable Nonviolent Early Childhood Setting. Classes will be held 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, April 19 and 21, at Penquis CAP, 262 Harlow St.

The training session will cover a broad range of topics, including the impact of nonviolent media and toys on children and their play, the influence of a peaceable classroom in counteracting harmful lessons about violence and how to teach developmentally appropriate conflict resolution skills to children.

The registration fee is $15. Current child care providers may apply to the Penquis Resource Development Center’s Scholarship Fund for reimbursement of the fee. To obtain information, or to register, call 973-3533.

Child care workshop

The Penquis Community Action Program Resource Development Center will offer 18 hours of training in Caring for the Abuse Affected Child from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 15-16.

The training session will focus on raising awareness of the issues that affect children in families, substance abuse and domestic abuse. There is no charge for the training. Lunch is not provided. To register, call 973-3533.

Child care training

The Penquis Community Action Program Resource Development Center will offer 30 hours of training in Preschool Development in Family Child Care Settings 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursdays, April 26-May 26, at Penquis CAP, 262 Harlow St., Bangor. Topics covered will be the aspects of providing child care for 3- to 5- year-olds in family child care settings.

There is a $15 registration fee. Current child care providers may apply for reimbursement of the fee. To register, call 973-3533.

Transportation issues

The Penobscot Council on Transition will present Transportation Issues for Students with Disabilities at 3-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, April 13, at Alpha One, 1048 Union St. Topics will include driving assessments for students with disabilities, how to use The BAT system, who qualifies for LYNX, and the new rules of Maine’s DVM. Chamber singers

The Windham Chamber Singers will present a concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 225 French Street.

Under the direction of Dr. Richard Nickerson, the Windham Chamber Singers rose to fame in 1996 when they captured the Prize of Vienna at the International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna, Austria. Since then they have appeared at the White House, Carnegie Hall and on the “Today Show,” “CBS This Morning” and the “NBC Nightly News.”

The concert will feature the works of Mozart, Schumann, Faure, Orban, Hopkins and other lighter selections.

The concert is part of the choir’s annual spring tour, which offers workshops, clinics, school assemblies and public performances.

Art and Science of Pruning

Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor will offer two sessions of the “Art and Science of Pruning” to the community.

The six-week noncredit course introduces basic concepts of pruning woody landscape plants. Students will learn by doing – pruning a wide variety of woody plants including small flowering trees, deciduous shrubs and evergreens. No large trees will be pruned; all pruning will be done with both feet on the ground.

The instructor and developer of the course, Reeser C. Manley, is an assistant professor at the University of Maine in the Department of Plant, Soil and Environmental Sciences.

The course will be offered twice: April 9-May 14, and again June 4-July 16. Classes meet 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays. Tuition is $125, text not included. Pre-registration is required, call 974-4621. For course text, contact the EMCC Bookstore at 974-4638.

Clean Clothes workshop

The Growing the Market for Sweatshop-Free Clothes in Eastern Maine workshop has been rescheduled to 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, at Wellman Commons, Bangor Theological Seminary.

The workshop will feature Michael Shuman, vice president for enterprise development for the Training and Development Corp. of Bucksport. He is the author of “Going Local: Creating Self-Reliant Communities in the Global Age.”

Sponsored by PICA, Clean Clothes Consortium, Bangor Theological Seminary, Community Radio WERU-FM and the University of Maine Bookstore, the workshop will help area apparel vendors know how to identify sources of clean clothes and reach consumers who want to make a difference with their purchasing dollars. Antiques appraisal fair

The St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary will hold its second annual Antique and Collectible Appraisal Fair 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Spectacular Event Center, 395 Griffin Road, Bangor.

Appraiser Bruce Buxton and his team will be on hand to inform the public of the true worth of cherished items. The cost is $8 for one item, $15 for two, and $20 for three.

Bruce Buxton specializes in general antiques, fine art, sculpture, pewter and silver. Geraldine Wolf and Elizabeth Turner will appraise antique jewelry. Douglas Hardy will appraise rare books, manuscripts, maps and autographs.

Paul Zebiak will appraise American and European coins, watches, medals, paper currency and political memorabilia. Phyllis Gaul will appraise early and pattern glass. Lynne Gauvin-Marzilli will appraise textiles, vintage clothing and dolls. Jody McMorrow will appraise porcelain, ceramics and general antiques.

The appraisers are certified and qualified to appraise all other types of antiques and collectibles.

Proceeds from the event will benefit patient care at St. Joseph Healthcare.

Religious roots of peace

Inspired by the newly formed Interfaith Response, the Bangor Theological Seminary will serve as host to a panel discussion, “The Foundations of Peace and Nonviolence in Faith Traditions,” from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, April 10, Wellman Commons, 300 Union St.

Those who will participate in the dialogue are Rabbi David Cantor of Beth Israel Synagogue, Bangor; Wassim Mazraany, a surgeon and Muslim Arab who grew up in Lebanon; the Rev. James Gower, a retired Catholic priest and longtime peace activist who lives in Bar Harbor; and the Rev. Elaine Hewes, pastor at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Bangor. The Rev. Dr. William Imes, president of BTS, will preside as moderator.

Brewer

Benefit concert

Aztec Two-Step and guitarist Jon Pousette-Dart will appear in concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at the Brewer Middle School.

In the past, Aztec Two-Step has shared the stage with Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Talking Heads, Bill Cosby, The Beach Boys, Jackson Browne, Bette Midler and Heart. In 1987 the group received Best Folk Album at the New York Music Awards.

Jon Pousette-Dart led the Pousette-Dart Band through four albums for Capital Records from 1976-80. His new CD, “Heart and Soul,” will be released this month.

Dixmont

Zoot Suit Revue, dessert social

A dessert social featuring Back Door Dance Studio’s Zoot Suit Revue will be held Saturday, April 9, at the Etna-Dixmont School on Route 143.

The dessert sale begins at 5:30 p.m., and show time is 7 p.m. Admission is by donation. Door prizes will be awarded and raffles will be available. Proceeds will benefit Dixmont’s Bicentennial celebration in 2007.

Hampden

Sewing class

The Bangor Area Sewing Guild will hold a class in making lingerie at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at the Hampden Municipal Building. The class project is a camisole, but demonstrations on how to make other lingerie items will be given. The cost is $10 for members, $15 for others. Call 941-8815 to obtain a list of materials needed.

Annual auction for sports

The annual auction to benefit Hampden Academy sports will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 9, in the old gymnasium. Preview is at 5 p.m.

Items up for auction include bronze sculptures by Forest Hart, an Otter kayak, a Guide canoe, a bicycle, a pearl necklace, a variety of gift certificates and more.

Refreshments will be served.

Hampden Children’s Day

The committee for Hampden Children’s Day will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, at the town office. All are welcome.

Hermon

Auxiliary yard sale

The Auxiliary of the Hermon Fire Department will hold a yard sale 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the fire station on Billings Road.

The group is accepting donations of salable items, and they will be greatly appreciated.

Orono

Book sale

The American Association of University Women will hold its annual used book sale 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Church of Universal Fellowship, Main Street, Orono. The sale will include used books for adults and children, and some books in French and German.

Early birds may shop from 8-9 a.m. for $5.

“Pink Chimneys” author Ardeana Hamlin will be on hand to sign her latest novel, “A Dream of Paris,” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Light lunches and a snack bar will be available.

Book donations for the sale may be dropped off any time at the Orono Public Library, or bring books to the church side entrance on Juniper Street between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., Wednesday-Friday, April 6-8. To obtain more information, call 945-6711.

Winterport

Union Meeting House

The Winterport Union Meeting House annual meeting is set for 6 p.m. Sunday, April 10, at the Winterport Historical Building, Main Street. Members and friends are invited to attend.
