Creek helps Maine sweep Blue Devils

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Greg Creek, Matt McGraw and Joe Hough each hit a solo home run in the second game, helping the University of Maine baseball team earn a doubleheader sweep of Central Connecticut State on Wednesday at Balf-Savin Field.

The Black Bears held on for a 4-3 victory in Game 2 after taking the opener 8-1.

UMaine, now 13-8, has won four straight and seven of its last eight contests.

In the nightcap, freshman John Tesseyman came on to record the final two outs and preserve the win with runners on first and third.

Tesseyman was one of five UMaine pitchers who combined to allow seven hits and two earned runs.

Justin Bishop (1-0) earned the victory with 1 1/3 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief.

Hough and McGraw posted two hits each for UMaine.

The Bears trailed 1-0 in the fourth when McGraw led off with a single, moved up on Curt Smith’s single and eventually scored on Mike Ferriggi’s infield hit.

Creek, McGraw and Hough homered over the next three innings to make it 4-1 before the Blue Devils (8-9) rallied. Pinch-hitter Derek Swilley led off the seventh with a single against reliever Nolan Boike, who issued two one-out walks to load the bases.

Boike was lifted in favor of Tesseyman, who induced Sean Salvatore’s sacrifice fly to right for the second out. An error by Ross Cantara on Tom Pezzello’s fly ball to right allowed the second run to score before Tesseyman struck out John Blaze to notch the save.

In the opener, three UMaine pitchers combined on a three-hitter and were backed by an 11-hit attack. Starter Greg Creek (2-1) was credited with the win after allowing two hits and one run in 2 1/3 innings.

Troy Martin pitched 3 1/3 innings of one-hit shutout ball and Scott Robinson posted a scoreless inning for the Bears.

Joel Barrett of Brewer doubled and singled with two RBIs for UMaine while Smith and Cantara each singled twice with an RBI. Hough also hit two singles.

Already leading 1-0 on Ferriggi’s RBI double in the second, UMaine tallied four runs in the third. Ryan Quintal and Cantara stroked run-scoring singles, Barrett hit an RBI double and Smith delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.

The Bears extended the lead to 7-1 in the fourth on a Quintal sacrifice fly and Barrett’s run-producing single.

At Brunswick, John Lawrie hit a two-run triple to key a six-run third inning as the Polar Bears won in a slugfest.

Nick Lawler had a RBI double and solo homer for Bowdoin while Erik Morrison singled in a run.

Tip Fairchild slammed a solo homer for the Huskies of Gorham and Ryan Bourque added an RBI single.

St. Joseph’s earns sweep

At Standish, Charlie Furbush pitched five shutout innings while striking out three in earning the 5-0 win for the Monks in the first game of a doubleheader with Castleton State (Vt.). St. Joseph’s won the second game 5-3.

In the first game, former George Stevens Academy standout Mark Clapp had a double and a pair of singles for St. Joseph’s.

Philip Fuleo and Adam Massey had a double apiece for the Spartans.

In the second game, Andrew Dvilinsky had a two-run double and an RBI single as the Monks completed the sweep.

Greg Kimball earned the win, pitching six innings with no earned runs for St. Joe’s.

Mark Alger hit a solo homer for Castleton State.

Softball

UMass sweeps UMaine

At Amherst, Mass., University of Massachusetts pitchers Barb LaFogg and Jenna Busa combined to allow just three hits as the Minutemen earned a 5-1, 3-0 doubleheader sweep of the University of Maine.

In the first game, Hilary Puglia doubled and drove in two runs while Stacy Proctor singled twice and doubled for UMass. LaFogg struck out 13 and walked two in the win.

Amy Kuhl and Dana Grimm each singled for UMaine. Grimm scored on an error in the sixth for the Bears’ only run.

In the second game, Busa fanned nine and walked one. Denise Denis drove in three runs with a double and a single.

Kuhl singled for the only Maine hit. Reliever Sarah Bennis struck out seven and gave up one hit in 3 2/3 innings.

Babson blanks USM twice

At Babson Park, Mass., Babson’s Stacy Schlicht and Meg Gaskell fired 1-0 and 5-0 shutouts over the University of Southern Maine.

In the opener, Schlicht gave up just three hits and struck out eight. Andrea Cartullo scored the game’s lone run on a sacrifice by Darcy Lantz.

Melissa Henderson scattered four hits while fanning eight for the Huskies of Gorham.

In the second game, Gaskell tossed a two-hit shutout and hit an RBI double in the second. Jess Cohen then doubled home Gaskell.

Henderson took the loss again for Southern Maine.
