BANGOR – The Husson College Eagles scored just seven runs in their North Atlantic Conference-opening doubleheader against defending champ Thomas College of Waterville Wednesday.

But it was enough for a sweep as starting pitchers Chris Sargent and Travis Tripp and relievers James Gray and Jon Tefft held the Terriers to six hits in Husson’s 3-0 and 4-1 victories.

Husson is now 8-9 after extending its winning streak to six games. Thomas fell to 3-10.

“Our starters and relievers came in and threw well,” said Husson catcher Billy Kane. “Chris and Travis hit the spots with all of their pitches. They threw their breaking stuff for strikes, and when they’d get ahead in the count, they’d throw them out of the zone. They got them to chase a little bit.”

Thomas College junior first baseman Brandon Connors, who had three of the six hits – including a homer in the nightcap, said Tripp’s curve wasn’t as sharp as Sargent’s “but [Tripp] mixed up his speeds real well and hit his spots.”

“You can’t win games if you get six hits the whole day,” said Thomas coach Greg King. “Their pitching shut us down.”

Tripp pitched 6 2/3 innings of three-hit, one-run ball in the nightcap, striking out five and walking two. He threw 64 strikes among his 104 pitches. Tefft came on to get the last out.

“I had a good curve and a good changeup and I was able to spot my fastball,” said Tripp. “I was definitely happy with [my outing].”

The Eagles gave Tripp all the run support he needed in the first inning when they scored three runs off righty Stefan Wrigley, who scattered 10 hits in a solid route-going effort.

Aaron Brideau was hit by a pitch to start the rally, and Jason Harvey reached on catcher interference.

One out later, Sean Brawn grounded a sharp single to center to score Brideau.

“He had thrown everyone a fastball, so I sat on one and ripped it,” said Brawn.

A Wrigley wild pitch moved the runners up and Kyle Mathieu drilled a single to center to score both.

Husson added an insurance run in the fourth when Adam Sheehan legged out an infield hit, continued to second on an ensuing throwing error, and scored on Brideau’s crisp single to right-center.

Connors hit his fourth homer of the season to open the seventh, a long blast to left.

Sean Brawn and Brideau had two hits each for Husson.

In the opener, Sargent pitched 5 2/3 innings of three-hit, shutout baseball. He fanned four, walked five, and threw 56 strikes among his 99 pitches.

Gray came on to get the final out in the sixth, stranding two runners, and pitched a scoreless seventh thanks to Husson’s second double play of the game.

“I didn’t throw my best game, but it was solid enough to get a win,” said Sargent, who relied on his curve and splitter to get important outs with men on base.

Husson scored all three runs in the second.

Mathieu and Kane drew walks, Shawn Henderson singled to load the bases, and Adam Sheehan lined an RBI single to center before two-out infield singles by Jason Harvey and Justin Spencer delivered the final two runs.

Spencer had three hits for Husson with Harvey and Sheehan contributing two apiece.

Connors had two hits for Thomas and Jordan Stebbins tossed an impressive nine-hit game.
