ELLSWORTH – The Hancock County grand jury this week indicted a woman for allegedly having sex with an inmate on leave from a juvenile detention facility in Charleston while she was employed there as a social worker.

Tiffany L. Randall, 32, is charged with one felony count of gross sexual assault, according to the indictment handed up Tuesday.

The charge stems from an incident that allegedly occurred in Ellsworth on Nov. 15, 2003.

Assistant District Attorney Mary Kellett said the inmate, who was 17 at the time, had a weekend pass to leave the Mountain View Youth Development Center in Charleston and visit his home in Ellsworth. Randall allegedly met him there outside of her work schedule and that’s where the assault is alleged to have occurred, Kellett said.

Contacted Thursday, the detention center’s superintendent, Eric Hansen, confirmed that Randall no longer works there. She was employed through the state Department of Behavioral and Developmental Services as a contracted social worker and had been stationed at the Charleston facility for the past few years, he said.

Hansen said Thursday he was aware of the incident and of the indictment but had no additional information about Randall’s termination.

“It’s an unfortunate situation, all around,” he said.

Others indicted Tuesday included:

. Lloyd G. Killam, 22, of Bucksport, aggravated unlawful furnishing of scheduled drugs, furnishing alcohol to a minor, unlawful sexual contact and assault. According to the District Attorney’s Office, Killam is accused of giving alcoholic beverages and sharing his own prescription drugs with a 16-year-old boy and assaulting and having inappropriate sexual contact with a 21-year-old woman on May 18, 2004.

. Adam W. Staples, 35, of Bucksport, gross sexual assault and assault. The charges stem from an incident that allegedly occurred Jan. 6 in Bucksport. The victim is a 34-year-old woman, Kellett said.

. Lowell O. Tibbetts Jr., 39, of Franklin, sexually abusing a minor. He is accused of having sex with a 14-year-old girl in his home.
