At least one large retailer recommends the following criteria for choosing between different types of lawn mowers:

. One-quarter acre or less, a push mower is sufficient.

. One-quarter to one-half acre, purchase a self-propelled walk-behind.

. In excess of a half-acre, consider a riding mower or garden tractor.

In addition to the size of the lawn, other vendors recommend that purchasers consider the following:

. Do you bag clippings or mulch?

. Do you desire a rear bag or side discharge?

. Would you prefer a push mower or a self-propelled mower?

. Do you want recoil or electric start?

Certainly other criteria can be considered, such as the lay of the land being mowed as well as the health of the individual responsible.

An additional tip from the people at Cornell University may help you make a mower choice. They say don’t cut unless the grass is 3-31/2 inches tall. When you do cut, never remove more than one-third of the height in one mowing.
