Drama fans in Aroostook County are in for a treat when they attend “Cotton Girls” on Thursday, April 14, at the Caribou Performing Arts Center, 308 Sweden St. in Caribou.
Tickets are $5 at the door.
The show stars Caribou High School juniors Theresa Gaghagen and Kathleen Lewis, and senior Micaela O’Shaughnessy, who was a winner in last month’s competition at the State Drama Festival at Noble High School in North Berwick.
The girls also won All Festival Cast Awards for their performances, and they are now preparing for the New England Drama Festival, which is April 21-23 in Duxbury, Mass.
“This is a showcase of winning plays. They won’t be competing,” explained CPAC director and Caribou High drama coach Ginny White, who directed the play with her daughter, Megan Towle. “But they will be rated, and our goal would be to get the highest rating.”
“Cotton Girls” by Scott Tobin is the story of three girls who, in the late 1950s, find themselves stuck on a Ferris wheel on graduation night.
CHS alumnus Brett McCormick designed the Ferris wheel for the set.
White said McCormick, who is a student at the University of Connecticut, did the freehand drawing during Christmas break.
White then took that design to the CHS welding and carpentry class, and those students built the set.
Two members of that class, seniors D.J. Theriault and Justin Rockwell, travel with the actors as their crew.
Proceeds from the Thursday performance will help pay for royalties for performing the play, as well as additional expenses not covered by the school for the trip to Massachusetts, and will help fund the drama budget for next year’s programs, White explained.
On behalf of the Friends of the Calais Free Library, Ann Carter of Charlotte invites you to Poetry Night at the Calais Free Library at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at the library.
Everyone is welcome as a listener or reader, Carter reports, and “as well as poetry to feed the mind, soul and sense of humor, there will be delicious soup to feed the body. This will, of course, be supplemented by bread and beverages and a sweet.”
Poets who want to share their work with others, as well as those who want to read anything from nursery rhymes to the classics, are welcome.
At the event, you will also be able to sign up to “help out in the cleanup at the Friend’s secondhand bookstore” from 9 am. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 30, Carter wrote, in preparation for the spring opening of the shop, which is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 7.
Friends of CFL was organized in 2000, and hosts Poetry Night twice a year.
You are invited to an Open House Tea to recognize National Library Week 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at the Lincoln Memorial Library in Dennysville.
Special guests are local folk singer David Wilder and Eastport mystery author Sarah Graves.
Fish decoys, carved and painted by New York artist Aage Bjgin and owned by Jonathan Jaques, who will be the librarian for the occasion, will be displayed for your enjoyment.
And this added incentive may appeal to certain folks: Long overdue books may be returned free on this special day.
Joanie Jones of Pembroke reports the St. Croix Valley International Garden Club will host its opening meeting and luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, at the First Congregational Church, 11 Calais Ave. in Calais.

Jones wrote that the club meets the third Wednesday of the month, April through December, and features “guest speakers, workshops and garden-related field trips.”
The club maintains 10 town gardens in the area, distributes seeds to schoolchildren and participates in other garden-related activities.
Its fund-raisers include garden shows, teas, plant sales and home garden tours, and the club “welcomes new members from both sides of the border,” she added.
For more information about the garden club, call Joan Edwards, 726-9664.
