Public invited to help Valley Grange celebrate

April is Grange Month, and Valley Grange No. 144 in Guilford is hosting and participating in activities of interest to people living in that area.

On behalf of Valley Grange, Walter Boomsma of Abbot invites you to attend its Open House and Award Ceremony, beginning with a potluck super at 6 p.m. and the program at 7 p.m. Friday, April 15, at the Grange, located on Guilford Center Road at Butter Road in Guilford.

If you plan to attend the free supper, you are asked to bring a dish to share.

At this event, Valley Grange will bestow its Community Citizen Award on some deserving, but unsuspecting, individual.

Boomsma hopes people will attend and take advantage of the opportunity to learn about the grange’s fun-filled, educational programs and activities its members enjoy.

Next up is the Spring Tune Up for the Mind and Body that starts with a Lunch & Health Fair at 11 a.m. and presentations at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at the Grange.

Small donations are requested for the lunch, and you will be able to obtain information on nutrition, diabetes and smoking cessation as well as take advantage of blood pressure and skin cancer screenings and massage therapy.

At 1 p.m., Jill Ward, Piscataquis County coordinator for the Maine Alzheimer’s Association, will discuss “How to Keep Our Minds Sharp As We Age.” Her talk will explain when memory loss can be a symptom of a more serious condition and offer connections for support programs available for those affected by Alzheimer’s.

If you cannot attend either of these events but would like to know more about the Grange and its opportunities for you, call Boomsma at 876-4131 or 343-1842, e-mail boomsma@midmaine.com, or write him at 17 River Road, Abbot 04406.

Valley Grange was organized April 10, 1875, in the Schoolhouse at Lowe’s Bridge with 32 charter members present.

The public is invited to attend the annual meeting of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor.

That meeting is at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at First United Methodist Church, 703 Essex St. in Bangor.

Vice president Vinal Applebee hopes members of the community will attend “to learn more about our organization and mission and ask questions.”

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization that invites volunteers to help build affordable houses with HH partnership families.

Partnership families are those who have the ability to repay a set mortgage and willingly work at least 300 hours with HH volunteers to build the home.

Money repaid by the new owners is recycled in another home, with no profit made by HH of Greater Bangor.

If you would like more information about this organization and its work, call its answering service, 942-8977, and ask to have an HHGB volunteer call you.

Folk musicians Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman, better known as Aztec Two-Step, appear in concert with singer-songwriter-arranger-guitarist Jon Pousette-Dart at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at Brewer Middle School, 5 Somerset St.

Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased at the Grasshopper Shop in Bangor, Summit Sound, 341 Ohio St., Bangor, or online at www.3talltrees.com.

Proceeds benefit Children’s Miracle Network of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems.

The concert is a presentation of 3 Tall Trees Productions.

According to information provided by Jill Reynolds of Eastern Maine Charities, Aztec Two-Step has appeared in concert with Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Talking Heads, Bill Cosby, The Beach Boys, Jackson Browne, Bette Midler and others.

Pousette-Dart led the Pousette Dart Band and opened for acts such as The Byrds, Orleans, the J. Geils Band and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

His newest CD, “Heart and Soul,” featuring drummer Billy Ward, is being released this month.

You are invited to join the Heart of Maine Chorus of Sweet Adelines International in celebrating its 25th anniversary in concert during “Remember When, 25 Years of Harmony,” at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 17, at the Brewer Auditorium on Wilson Street.

In addition to performances by the chorus and the High Steppers, soloist Zachary Field will perform, and Clayton Rogers will entertain during intermission.

General admission is $10, $7 for seniors and free for children under 12.

Prepaid tickets for $7 each can be obtained by calling Anita McGarry at 942-6046.

The site is handicapped-accessible, and refreshments will be available.
