Cook books
Ever devoured a good novel? Then you’re ready for the fourth annual Books2Eat event at Eastern Maine Community College. The fund-raiser for EMCC’s library features edible books (in the form of cakes, crackers, etc.). Cooks can compete in four categories: professional chef, culinary arts student, everyone else, and a special award for the edible Stephen King (a representation of or from his work). The event will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 20. For information or to enter an edible book, call 974-4640.
Pick-up sticks
If you’re a bumbling idiot when it comes to chopsticks, these bright, clothespin-inspired sticks from CB2 (the hip label from Crate & Barrel) lets you cheat in style. They cost $3.95 a pair and are available online at www.cb2.com.
World of wines
Variety (and varietals) will be on the menu when Dan Kravitz of Hand Picked Selections joins chef Rich Hanson for a wine dinner at Cleonice Mediterranean Bistro. Each year, Kravitz travels the world to find wines of high value and great quality. The five-course meal begins with meze, the Greek version of tapas, paired with two Greek wines – a Chardonnay and a St. George. For the second course, a Mussel and Spinach Gratin will be paired with Cuvee de Pena 2003, a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Mouvedre from the French Pyrennes. The third course hails from Spain – a rich Rabbit Paella paired with Ia Garnacha 2003, followed by a fourth course of Grilled Flank Steak with Chimichurri served with crispy fried potatoes, beets and parsnips paired with an Argentine blend of Bonarda, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. For dessert, a complex Moscato paired with a zabaglione. The dinner begins at 6 p.m. Monday, April 18, and costs $55 per person (not including tax and gratuity.) For reservations, call 664-7554.
