BANGOR – For the second consecutive Wednesday, Husson College righthanders Chris Sargent and Travis Tripp silenced opposing bats and received support from their mates, who played solid defense and delivered timely hits.

The result was another North Atlantic Conference sweep as the Eagles beat the youthful University of Maine-Farmington Beavers 6-1, 8-1 at the Winkin Baseball Complex.

Husson had swept Thomas College 3-0 and 4-1 a week ago.

Husson is now 13-10 overall with 11 wins in its last 12 games. Husson is 4-0 in the NAC. UM-Farmington fell to 1-7, 0-2, respectively.

Sargent overcame control trouble to throw six innings of four-hit, one-run ball in the opener. He struck out five and walked four while throwing 56 strikes among his 86 pitches.

“I twisted my [right] ankle the other day and I was worried about that a little bit,” said Sargent, who features a fastball, splitter and a curve. “I struggled a little bit with my control. Luckily, it was the same as the last game. I threw off-speed stuff and got them to ground out and fly out.”

“He hit his spots real well,” said UMF lead-off hitter Devin Gill.

Husson senior left fielder and lead-off hitter Aaron Brideau was the offensive catalyst in the opener as he tripled, singled twice, scored twice and drove in a run.

“I get on base and let the other guys drive me in. That’s all I can do,” said Brideau.

Brideau’s long lead-off triple to left and Jason Harvey’s ringing double staked Husson to a 1-0 lead in the first and the Eagles added three in the third on singles by Shawn Henderson and Brideau, Jason Harvey’s sacrifice, Justin Spencer’s RBI base hit, Sean Brawn’s RBI fielder’s choice and Kyle Mathieu’s run-scoring single.

Brideau and Chris McInnis added RBI singles in the fourth and fifth.

Freshman Ben Savielo’s solo homer to left in the third accounted for the UMF run.

Second baseman Henderson was the defensive star as he lunged to his right to turn Oliver Pettengill’s bases-loaded liner into an inning-ending double play in the fourth.

He also dove to his left to grab Peter McLaughlin’s game-ending liner.

“He made two nice plays,” said UMF coach Dick Meader.

In the nightcap, Tripp pitched six innings of three-hit, one-run ball with four strikeouts and two walks.

He threw just 71 pitches, 48 for strikes.

“My curve worked pretty well. My slider kept the hitters off balance and I hit spots with my fastball, in and out,” said Tripp.

Brawn was the offensive star with a run-scoring single to left in the two-run first inning and a three-run homer in the fifth that landed on a roof and broke the game open.

“I need to start producing when we get runners in scoring position,” said clean-up hitter Brawn. “I’ve been lacking so far. It’s about time I started doing something.”

Two misplayed flies resulted in two unearned first-inning runs on Spencer’s sacrifice fly and Brawn’s base hit.

Henderson’s two-run single in the fourth made it 4-0 as his sharply-hit grounder was screened by base-runner McInnis and exploded at the feet of shortstop Jacob Turner.

Spencer had two hits in each game.
