Quintal, Hough power UM sweep

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Maine baseball team racked up 21 runs off 25 hits as the Black Bears swept Brown 12-4 and 11-2 Wednesday.

In the first game, Maine scored a combined six runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Ryan Quintal finished with three RBIs on three singles and Curt Smith drove in three runs on a double and two singles. Troy Martin earned the win and three Black Bear pitchers combined to allow seven hits and one earned run.

Matt Kutler led Brown with a single, a double and two RBIs.

In the second game, the Black Bears scored three runs off three hits in the first inning. Maine’s Joe Hough hit a solo homer in the second. Reliever John Tesseyman shut out Brown for six innings.

Eric Larsen had an RBI for Brown.

Bowdoin 10, UMass-Boston 6

At Brunswick, the Polar Bears pushed across five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past the Beacons.

Jon Koperniak sparked the rally with a two-run triple for Bowdoin while Nick Lawler got it started with an RBI double. Patrick Duchette slammed a two-run homer in the second.

Pat Donovan hit a two-run home run to lead UMass-Boston.

At Standish, Andy Exley hit a two-out, three-run homer in the seventh inning to boost the Monks past the White Mules.

Saint Joseph’s had to rally, with Charlie Furbush scoring on a throwing error in the third to tie the game. Mark Clapp hit three singles for the Monks and Furbush had two singles and an RBI. Exley also doubled and singled.

Nick Spillane led Colby with two singles and an RBI.

Softball

UMF sweeps Maine Maritime

At Farmington, the Beavers pounded out 30 hits as they swept a doubleheader, picking up an 11-0 win in the first game and a 12-4 win in the second.

In the first game, UMF scored 10 unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, sparked by Kelly McDonough’s 3-run homer. Brandi Rideout singled and drove in two runs, while Renee Trafton hit three singles and Mary Berry and Holly Tripp each singled twice.

Maegan Cloutier, Hillary Arris and Kristin Gabor each hit a single for the Mariners of Castine.

In the second game, UMF’s Megan Goodrow homered, singled and had two RBIs. Mary Berry hit two doubles and a single to go with two RBIs and Sarah Martin drove in two runs on a double and two singles.

Arris doubled, singled and knocked in a run while Amy Asselin singled and had two RBIs.

Colby, Bowdoin split

At Waterville, the Polar Bears and White Mules split a NESCAC twinbill, with Bowdoin of Brunswick taking the first game 10-4 and host Colby the second 4-3.

In the first game, Bowdoin scored eight runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings to erase a 4-2 deficit. Rachael Gordon led the attack with three hits, including a double.

Lindsey Toomey pitched five innings and took the loss for Colby.

In the second game, Kara Fagan knocked a two-run double to spark a four-run fourth inning for Colby.

Wendy Bonner and Miki Starr added an RBI single apiece for the winners.

Brittany Odgen tripled and scored for the Polar Bears.

Husson, Thomas split

At Waterville, the Eagles scored two unearned runs in the top of the seventh to rally for a 3-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader. The Terriers shut down Husson 8-0 in the second game.

In the first game, Wendy Butler drove in both seventh-inning runs for Husson, spoiling Thomas pitcher Nicole Smith’s five-hitter. Taralee Webster earned the win for the Eagles, allowing two runs on nine hits.

In the second game, Jen Lane sparked the Terriers with a two-run single. Joy Ireland earned the win for Thomas and Ashlee Paschal took the loss for Husson.

Plymouth State sweeps Monks

At Plymouth, N.H., Kim Deffs and Rose Eaton each pitched a shutout for Plymouth State University as they swept Saint Joseph’s College of Standish, 8-0 in the first game and 2-0 in the second.

In the first game, Jeffs tossed a perfect game with 10 strikeouts while Jenny Norton sparked the offense with a double, two singles and four RBIs.

Kristi Curry had two singles and two RBIs for Plymouth State and Michelle Dubois added an RBI double.

In the second game, Eaton fired a two-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Colleen Courtney had two singles with an RBI while Ashley Fleming doubled and scored on a St. Joe’s error.

Deb Brown and Leanne Morton each singled for the Monks.

USM splits with Endicott

At Gorham, Elyse Colby’s RBI triple in the top of the seventh inning rallied Endicott College to tie the Southern Maine Huskies at 4 in the second game of their doubleheader. The second game ended in a 4-4 tie while Endicott won the opener 5-2.

The second game was called after seven innings due to darkness.

In the second game, Caitlin Stivaletta smacked a two-run triple to spark a three-run second inning for the Huskies. Caterina Riitano singled and scored on an error in the third.

In the first game, Katie Doherty, Megan Young and Ashley Labella each had an RBI single as the Gulls prevailed.

Nicole Reather collected an RBI on a fielder’s choice while Rachel Pearson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Riitano had an RBI double to go with a single for Southern Maine.
