Y fitness programs aim to battle the bulge

OLD TOWN – If you could have fun, develop friendships and become physically fit all at the same time, would you do it? Staffers at the Old Town-Orono YMCA learned that there is a resounding “yes” to that question when they developed programs that address healthy living for both youth and adults.

It is increasingly well-established that Americans are becoming a society which needs to be concerned with obesity and associated weight problems. Recent studies indicate that approximately 9 million schoolchildren nationwide are overweight or obese and the rate is increasing rapidly. It is near a crisis situation in America. Obesity brings with it a variety of other health concerns, such as Type II diabetes and cardiovascular problems. The combination of these health concerns has emotional repercussions, as well.

The Old Town-Orono YMCA announced recently that it offers structured programs at all levels to address these concerns. Additionally, the National YMCA and local YMCA celebrated Healthy Kids Day on April 9.

Amy Hamlin, YMCA health and fitness coordinator, said that programs designed specifically for children are available. These include Healthy Kids, a cardiovascular workout for fourth- and fifth-graders, and Youth Fitness Challenge, geared for middle school pupils.

As spring approaches, children may want to attend one of the many aquatic programs available or the sports-oriented programs, either at an individualized pace or as a class participant. The traditional basketball courts, handball courts and field house gymnastics programs round out the opportunities for youth.

The need for enjoyable and stimulating programs for adults is equally recognized as a national and local concern. The same children who are at risk for obesity and associated health concerns often have parents or relatives in a similar health risk condition.

Programs which address the health needs of adults include aquatic programs, which take place in a warm water pool heated to 87 degrees. Adults may swim at an individualized pace or participate in a structured water aerobic activity.
