MADAWASKA – Two students, one in Madawaska and one in SAD 24 at Van Buren, have been expelled from school in the last week for the safety of the school environment.
Dr. Danny R.P. Michaud, superintendent at Madawaska, said a student was expelled because of “safety concerns.”
He said the situation involved violence in the school. No weapons were involved in the incident.
The expelled student was not the person who police believe was involved in a bomb threat at the school last month. That student was the subject of an executive session with the school board, but no post-executive action was taken in that case.
At Van Buren, a student who brought a toy gun to school – an air or pellet gun -was expelled.
Superintendent Clayton Belanger said the student made believe he was shooting other students. He also aimed the gun at passing cars, according to complaints received by school officials.
“It scared a lot of students,” Belanger said. “Our policy does not differentiate between real guns and toy guns, and it is a zero-tolerance policy.”
The incident happened last month.
Belanger said original complaints were made to local police who seized the gun.
Both officials said students may petition the school boards to re-enter schools. Requirements placed on them need to be fulfilled before a request for readmission is made.
