Born in March 1993, Rafik is a charming and handsome boy who is friendly and engaging. He enjoys playing video games, swimming and horseback riding. Rafik has an excellent reading ability and has a deep love of books and stories. He also is creative and loves to sing.

Rafik has been in the care of the state Department of Health and Human Services since February 2002. Those who work closely with Rafik prefer that his adoptive family be open to him maintaining some contact with his younger sister.

A child with dramatic flair and a great sense of humor, Rafik has a desire to develop and deepen relationships and responds well to genuine, specific praise for an accomplishment. His greatest challenge is taking responsibility for his behavior.

Rafik has Ehler’s Danlos syndrome, Type III, which required medical attention. The syndrome is characterized by extensive hypermobility of joints and inhibits Rafik’s fine and gross motor skills. Rafik also wears a back brace to help with symptoms of the syndrome.

Now participating in therapy to work on issues related to the challenges of his past, Rafik has had many losses in his life and continues to struggle with them. He also receives speech therapy and occupational therapy services.

Rafik would benefit from a two-parent family with a lifelong commitment to him. A family that has experience with children with special needs is preferred. Rafik needs a loving family that can provide him with consistent structure and clear and enforced limits in a nurturing environment that will help keep him safe.

He would be most successful in a family where he is the youngest child because he enjoys being the center of attention. Rafik would very much like to have a family of his own.

Subsidy may be available to the most appropriate family.

Rafik is one of 220 Maine children in Maine DHHS care who are seeking an adoptive family. For information about Rafik or other children available for adoption, contact A Family for ME at (877) 505-0545 or visit www.afamilyforme.org.

A Family for ME is a
