Ready for a spring fling?
I am.
I’ve had it with cashmere sweaters. And wool pants have got to go. It’s time to take up with a shrunken blazer, jump into a big skirt and drape myself in vintage florals. It’s time to weed out your closet, toss the outdated stuff, fill in the gaps and stock up for spring.
That’s the fun part.
This spring, there are so many great trends, it’s hard to choose. Hardly any of them are ridiculous. Most would look fabulous, even on someone over 18, and all of them are available in a variety of price points.
I’ll begin with the shrunken blazer, an engineering marvel of epic (or Lilliputian, as the case may be) proportions. Even though it’s meant to look a bit too small, it makes you look a little smaller, too. I like the brocade version at Marden’s, and the adorable blazers at Old Navy. For a hip look at a reduced price, check out the options in the boys’ section of your local department store. If you have a more womanly figure, stick to your usual size. Just be sure the shoulders fit perfectly and the bottom of the jacket hits just above your hip – otherwise, the proportions will be all wrong.
On to the big skirt, which hides a multitude of sins while leaving your toned calves exposed. By “big,” I mean “somewhat pouffy.” The look is fitted at the waist but fuller than an A-line – pleats are welcome, and a sweet, floral pattern (circa 1950) is mandatory. Try Filene’s for cute juniors’ skirts and postcard-print misses’ skirts. Or visit Anthropologie.com for a sateen circle skirt embellished with fuchsia flowers in a vintage scarf print ($78).
For something a little more casual, try Bermuda shorts – long enough to cover, yet fitted enough to be slimming. American Eagle Outfitters and Old Navy have excellent options. They look especially sexy with heels (I bet you never thought you’d see “sexy” and “Bermuda shorts” in the same sentence, now, did you?)
On top, embellishment is key, whether you choose a cardigan, a supertrendy baby-doll tank (a la Abercrombie & Fitch) or a retro tunic (try Marden’s and T.J. Maxx ‘n More for bargains). You’ll earn extra points if a floral pattern is involved, as vintage florals are, in my humble opinion, spring’s hottest look. I covet the snap-top silk evening bag at Gap ($14.99). I’m smitten with Unlisted’s Pucci-esque kitten-heel mules at Shoegazer in Ellsworth or Filene’s in Bangor and I just can’t stop thinking about the lover-ly pleated skirts on the clearance rack at Target.
Of course, in real life, this means I’ll scour the thrift shops more often than usual for fabulous skirts and shirts.
For layering, be cheap and buy a ribbed tank at Old Navy. At two for $10, you get a ton of bang for the buck, especially when you wear it with the shrunken blazer, or layered with another tank like my friend Susan did the other day. So cute.
It’s OK to wear last summer’s poncho if you feel the need – just don’t buy another one, because while they’re not entirely out of style, they’re on their way. Instead, keep your shoulders warm with a sexy shrug like the pictured version from Filene’s. No need to invest in this look. Just buy something cute that will last you through fall.
Hold on to your capris. Break out the flip-flops. Keep your brooches, but again, don’t buy more. Ditto for the Chanel-inspired tweed and boucle jackets that were so hot last spring. Unpack your scarves (to tie on your handbags or lace up your sandals). Dust off your fitted denim jacket again. Take the twin sets out of storage (so cute with the big skirt). And bring on the white pants and (gasp!) white jeans. They’re back. And if you can get your thighs on a pair of Seven for All Mankind white jeans, so much the better.
The rest of spring’s best looks are similarly reminiscent of the ’80s – metallic sandals and clutches (be sure the look is sexy, NOT prommy), ballet flats (does anyone remember Sam&Libby?) citrusy brights, and natural jewelry with beads made of wood, coral, bone and turquoise.
And if white is the new black, then turquoise is the new pink. Not that the old pink is bad, but it’s good to have the blues this spring, in the form of jewelry, accessories, tops and skirts (visit zinc.com for the cutest turquoise and black skirt).
With any luck, the snow will hold off until next winter. But, given the ’80s renaissance I’ve seen, if we can hold off on high-waist, pegged-ankle pants for another few seasons, I’ll brave flurries in May.
