McKinney, Cheney get Maine past Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Molly McKinney singled to drive in Brittany Cheney in the sixth for the eventual game-winning run as the University of Maine softball team earned a 3-1 victory over Vermont Sunday. The Catamounts won the first game of the three-game series Saturday 3-0, and Maine took the second game Saturday 2-0.

In Sunday’s game, Cheney scored after hitting a triple. Jess Brady doubled to drive in Candace Jaegge in the seventh for the insurance run. Cheney drove in Brady with a single in the first. Jaegge scattered six hits and allowed one unearned run for the win.

Sarah Toczylowski had an RBI single for Vermont.

In Saturday’s first game, Kate Haber and Christine Toomey each had an RBI single for the Catamounts and Aimee Kern gave up four hits and struck out five.

Amy Kuhl, Molly McKinney, Lindsay Tibbetts and Sarah Bennis each singled for the Bears. Bennis earned the lost despite allowing four hits and three unearned runs.

In Saturday’s second game, Jenna Merchant fired a three-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks to pick up the win. She also singled and scored Maine’s two runs, one on an error and the other on a wild pitch.

Kate DeForge, Kate Ramsey and Toczylowski each singled for Vermont.

Colby, Trinity split

At Waterville Saturday, Wendy Bonner had two singles and two runs scored in the opener to lead Colby to a 5-2 win. But the White Mules came back with a shutout from pitcher Sara Dougherty for a 7-0 win in the second game.

In the first game, Kara Fagan drove in one run and scored one herself. Alaina Clark also had an RBI double for the White Mules. Stacy Hills had three hits for Trinity.

In the second game, Dougherty brought in three runs with two doubles and a single as well has allowing only three hits. Laura Watson also doubled and singled for the Bantams.

Mariners sweep Lesley

At Castine Sunday, Hillary Arris and Meagan Cloutier each spun complete-game efforts as the Mariners swept Lesley 4-1 and 5-4.

In the first game, Arris surrendered only one run on two hits while striking out three to earn the win for Maine Maritime.

Chelsie Carver had a pair of singles and two RBIs for the Mariners.

Maureen Mikos scored on a rundown for the Lynx.

In the second game, despite spotting the Lynx two runs in each of the first two innings, Cloutier settled down and shut out Lesley the rest of the way, striking out six in the process.

Jessica Taylor had a triple, two singles and scored two runs for Maine Maritime while Arris doubled, singled and knocked in two runs.

Jennifer LaRoche sparked the Lynx with two doubles and three RBIs.

UMF sweeps Lyndon State

At Farmington Saturday, Lauren Stacy and Stephanie Moriarty combined to allow just five hits and one run as the Beavers swept the Hornets 7-0 and 6-1.

In the first game, UM-Farmington’s Megan Goodrow drove in three runs on two doubles and a single. Sarah Martin and Brandi Rideout each hit two singles and Mary Berry doubled.

Jennifer Kirchoff and Candace Hougthon each singled for Lyndon State.

In the second game, Emily Davis singled and added two RBIs. Kristi Cochin hit two singles, while Cindy Ravinski hit a triple and a double.

Kirchoff doubled for the Hornets.

Lasell takes two from UMF

At Farmington Sunday, the Beavers had just six hits and committed nine errors in doubleheader losses to the Lasers, falling 5-0 in the first game and 3-1 in the second.

In the first game, all five Lasell runs were unearned because of seven UMF errors. Nicole Bucciero, Jayme Rautenberg and Sarah Armstrong of Lasell each had an RBI single.

Sarah Martin, Mary Berry and Kelly McDonough each singled for the Beavers.

In the second game, Bucciero had an RBI in the third and Wendy Riddle scored on a passed ball in the third to hold off UMF.

Sarah Martin doubled and singled for the Beavers.

Saint Joseph’s sweeps Newbury

At Standish Sunday, Megan Farrell pinch-hit a two-run double as the Monks picked up an 8-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader. Saint Joseph’s won the second game 11-4.

In the first game, Kahler Dowling allowed three hits in the shutout. Darcy Lee added an RBI triple.

Michaela Lynch led Newbury with two singles.

In the second game, Farrell and Allyson Ferguson each hit a two-run single for Saint Joseph’s. Leanne Morton and Helene Liaci each tripled, singled and drove in one run.

Newbury’s Danielle Rheaume hit three singles and had an RBI.

Thomas wins two

At Presque Isle on Sunday, Brindi Riley singled, bringing in two runs to help the Terriers rally in the top of the seventh to a 6-4 win in the second game. Thomas also won the first game 4-3.

In the second game, Riley racked up three singles for Thomas. Jodie Kenney, Morgan Anderson and Miraih Holmes each singled twice for the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

In the first game, Kayla Beaudoin singled twice for one RBI for the Terriers. For the Owls, Anna Lenentine doubled and singled twice, driving in one run. Monique Daniels also singled twice and scored a run.

Thomas splits with Lasell

At Waterville, Saturday, Laura Stone pitched both games for Lasell and only allowed one earned run. Lasell won the first game 4-0, but Thomas won the second 6-0.

In the first game, Stone struck out seven and allowed no runs for the 16-8 Lasers. Linda Wiliams batted 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Kayla Beaudoin had two hits for the Terriers.

In the second game, Joy Ireland struck out 14 Lasell batters. Jasmine Carey had one RBI and two stolen bases as Thomas went to 12-12.

USM earns split

At Gorham on Saturday, Melissa Henderson fired a one-hitter to lead the Huskies to a 2-0 win over UMass Dartmouth as they split their doubleheader. The Corsairs took the second game 6-2.

In the first game, Kim Lipton had an RBI double and Christen Lachapelle singled twice for Southern Maine.

In the second game, Allison Letendre led 9-10 UMass Dartmouth with a double and two RBI. Melissa Tavares also had an RBI triple.

For the 12-11-1 Huskies Whitney Westman and Caterina Riitano each brought in one run.

UMF sweeps UMPI

At Farmington, Eric Cummings’ two-run homer in the third helped boost the Beavers to a 5-3 victory in the second game of a doubleheader. UM-Farmington took the opener 2-1.

In the first game, Devin Gill had an RBI double and Peter McLaughlin added an RBI single as the Beavers rallied in the third inning. Matt Bray doubled and singled. Jared Wales pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Tim Tracy hit two singles for the Owls.

In the second game, McLaughlin hit two singles and drove in a run for UMF. Brody Artes added a single and an RBI. Jacob Turner earned the win, scattering five hits and striking out seven.

UMPI’s Brian Morrison doubled and had two RBIs. Mike Lane hit a double and two singles.

Trinity sweeps Colby

At Hartford, Conn., Jon Rappaport and Joe Wescott each tossed complete games as Trinity College swept Colby of Waterville, 5-1 and 9-0 on Saturday.

In the second game, Wescott fired a two-hit shutout with no walks and five strikeouts to earn the win.

Tim Cleary belted a solo homer while Andrew Fries doubled twice and scored a run.

In the first game, Chandler Barnard had two hits, including a solo homer for the Bantams. Rappaport fanned four and walked just one en route to the win.

Saint Joseph’s sweeps Becker

At Leicester, Mass., Mark Clapp singled twice in each game on Saturday bringing in three runs total as the Monk’s won 10-2 in the early game and 3-1 in last game.

In the first game, Andy Exley had a three RBI triple, while Luke Enman had double and a homerun for two RBI. Derek McIntosh and Charlie Furbush each singled and doubled once for one RBI.

Keith Renaud doubled and knocked out a homerun for Becker.

In the second, Enman tripled and singled for 15-7 Saint Joseph’s. Renaud tallied three singles for 13-11 Becker.

Husson sweeps Elms

At Holyoke, Mass., Saturday, the Eagles of Bangor pounded out 39 hits and 27 runs en route to a doubleheader sweep of Elms, 20-2 and 7-3.

In the first game, Jason Harvey had two doubles, three singles and five RBIs while Justin Spencer tallied six singles and knocked in six runs for Husson.

Mike Cowperthwaite earned the win for the Eagles, pitching five strong innings with four hits, no runs and five strikeouts.

In the second game, Sean Brawn had two singles and two RBIs while Aaron Brideau notched a double and a single as Husson earned the sweep.

Robert Webber went the distance for the Eagles, scattering eight hits and three runs, all earned while striking out eight and walking none.

Becker sweeps Husson

At Leicester, Mass. Sunday, Becker College rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to take the first game of a doubleheader with Husson College, 9-8.

Becker also won the second game, 11-4.

In the first game, Kevin Renaud belted a two-run homer after brother Keith singled. After singles by Devin Caron, Nick Clemente and a walk to Jim Bombard to load the bases, Dave Harbee’s single drove in the game-winner.

Aaron Brideau paced the Eagles with a solo homer, RBI double and RBI single. Kyle Mathieu had two singles and two RBIs.

In the second game, Becker scored six first-inning runs of Husson starter Chris Sargent to ground the Eagles early.

Keith Renaud led off with a solo homer while Jim Bombard and Mike Weckworth each hit two-run homers in the inning.

Justin Spencer belted a two-run homer for Husson.

Monks win two

At Holyoke, Mass., Saint Joseph’s collected 34 hits to post 10-3 and 12-0 victories on Sunday.

In the first game, Andy Exley doubled once and singled twice for Saint Joseph’s. Matt Shanahan doubled for two RBI. Luke Enman and Andrew Wood each singled twice for one RBI.

Mike Zenkert singled twice for Elms.

In the second game, Derek McIntosh had two singles, a double and a triple for two RBI. Exley singled and doubled for another 2 RBI. Brian Schools added three singles and a triple for the 17-7 Monks.

Nathan Hawes singled twice for 2-13 Elms.

Huskies sweep Terriers

At Gorham on Sunday, Brandon Brewer collected three hits and drove in five runs and Ryan Bourque nabbed five hits to lead the Huskies to a sweep of Thomas College, 14-2 and 5-3.

In the first game, Brewer had a double and a homerun. Tip Fairchild singled four times for one RBI, while Andrew Portwine doubled and singled for another RBI.

Brandon Connors led Thomas with a double, a single and an RBI.

In the second game, Bourque knocked out a home run and two singles for 15-6 Southern Maine. Rich McGraw added a double, a single and two RBI.

Tim Mercier singled twice for two RBIs as the Terriers dropped to 6-14.
