For the first time, all of Maine’s Air National Guard units received national awards for meritorious service in the same year, something not done in other states, a state Guard official said. “We’re the only state where every Air National Guard unit got an outstanding unit award, the only state ever for that to occur in,” Brigadier Gen. John W. Libby, Maine’s adjutant general, said recently. “That says everything we need to say about Air National Guard.” The 101st Air Refueling Wing based in Bangor, the 243rd Engineering Installation Squadron and the 265th Combat Communications Squadron, both based in South Portland, received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. The award was the 10th time that the 101st Air Refueling Wing received the award. It recognizes the unit for meritorious service from July 1, 2002, to June 30, 2004. During that time the Northeast Tanker Task Force achieved a new Air Mobility Command benchmark and the wing provided refueling and maintenance to a record 2,245 aircraft. Because of its reliability and willingness to take on tasks, the 101st Air Refueling Wing became known as the “quiet miracle,” Guard officials have said.
