Hospice experience

The op-ed, “Hospice one of the most humane ways to die” (BDN, April 14), by Miami Herald correspondent Frank Davies, was excellent. There is a lot of confusion about their services. I speak from experience, of the loving care given to my husband, Fred, by Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice.

At first he did not want to sign the required forms as he felt sure he was expected to be dead in six months. As his health continued to deteriorate he finally reluctantly signed.

The hospice team – nurses, social workers, physical therapists and home health aides – made life comfortable for him. He was urged to do anything he felt up to doing. With their skilled, gentle and loving care he was able to stay at home, where he died 14 months later.
