BANGOR – A Bangor man charged with stabbing an Eddington man last week remained at the Penobscot County Jail on Tuesday night, unable to make bail set during his initial appearance in court earlier Tuesday.
Brendan Burgess, 18, is charged with elevated aggravated assault after he allegedly stabbed another man in the arm last Thursday after a confrontation. Burgess was being held on a bail of $350 cash, although his bail included several provisions he must abide by if he is released, including a curfew.
Burgess was walking on Hammond Street at about 2:30 a.m. when he met a 26-year-old Eddington man on the street and the two had words, according to police. Burgess struck the other man in the arm with a 5-inch folding knife, Detective Sgt. Paul Kenison said Tuesday.
The injured man was treated at Eastern Maine Medical Center and subsequently released.
Bail conditions set at his initial appearance included that Burgess may not use or possess intoxicants; that he is subject to random searches for intoxicants and that he must have no contact with the victim or witnesses, Penobscot County Assistant District Attorney James Aucoin said. Burgess also must abide by a curfew and be home from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., when he starts for work.
A probable cause hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence to proceed with the charge is scheduled for May 26.
