Collins and ANWR

I applaud Sen. Susan Collins’ record in voting strongly and consistently in favor of legislation and budgetary issues that support sound environmental and social responsibility.

However, Collins must consider reversing her vote on the federal budget when it comes out of committee, specifically with regard to the inclusion of oil drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge. The oil estimated to exist in that region amounts to less than what this country uses in a six-month period.

What a shame it would be to reverse the good work of those who came before us and were so forward thinking as to recognize the importance of this unique national treasure. Drilling in ANWR would result in unimaginable and irreversible disruption to the sanctity of this region.

We must face the reality that the answer to rising oil prices lies in alternative fuel technologies and fuel efficiency improvements, not in the destruction of one of the precious few remaining natural areas on the planet, and one entrusted to our care and protection.

This is a global issue, not just an American one. Collins’ leadership is paramount to this endeavor, and it will show the way to others who will surely be willing to follow her lead in this important vote. No other environmental concern has ever been so important to the American people or to the world than is this, and the senator’s vote will count.

The unnecessary destruction of this region can be thwarted only with a diligent and persistent effort, and this vote is the most important step toward that eventuality. Others had their chance to see the light, now we need Collins to shine it brightly forward for others to follow.
