BANGOR – The Passion Play, a performance of the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 22-24, 29-30, and May 1, at the Union Street Brick Church.
The fourth annual event continues a tradition stretching back almost to the beginnings of the Christian faith, when those unable to read rare Bible texts were taught by seeing the story performed in private homes and in the catacombs under the city of Rome.
The art reached its peak during the Middle Ages when actors who traveled throughout Europe performed Passion Plays in churches and on portable stages. With the invention of the printing press, copies of the Bible became more widely available, and people learned to read the story for themselves. Performances of Bible stories went into decline for a time, but recently interest in the United States has been renewed, culminating in Mel Gibson’s film, “The Passion of the Christ.”
This year’s Passion Play will be performed by actors from several area churches. Patrick Gordon of Abundant Life Church will play the role of Jesus. Each annual production presents a different gospel telling and this year’s Passion Play draws from the Gospel of Mark. Director Charlene Kent set the play in modern times, with contemporary clothing and music. Lee Witting is the pastor.
A discussion will follow the performance and refreshments will be served. A $5 donation is suggested. To obtain more information or to make reservations, call 945-9798.
