‘Noises’ 2 plays in one

BANGOR – Farce will be on the menu through May 1 when Penobscot Theatre presents “Noises Off,” Michael Frayn’s play about a theater company’s rehearsal and backstage antics in the face of hilarious challenges. A performance is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, April 21. Opening night is 8 p.m. Friday, April 22. A pay-what-you-wish is at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 21.

“Noises Off” is not just one play, but two – a traditional, British sex farce, “Nothing On,” and the backstage farce that develops during that play’s final rehearsal and 12-week tour.

As time passes, the two farces begin to interlock, as the characters make their exits from “Nothing On” only to find themselves making entrances into the even more hilarious farce going on backstage and then exit from that only to find themselves thrown, stunned and staggering back into “Nothing On.”

In the end, at the disastrous final performance in Stockton-on-Tees, England, the two farces can be kept separate no longer and coalesce into one single collective breakdown.

“Noises Off” won both the Evening Standard and the Olivier Awards for Best Comedy when it was first produced and ran in the West End for nearly five years. Since its Broadway run, it has become a worldwide staple of the theater.

The creative team for the production of “Noises Off” includes director Mark Torres, costume designer Susan Smith, resident lighting designer Lynne Chase and set designer Nayna Ramey.

Cast members are A.J. Mooney, Kae Cooney, Adam Kuykendall, Mark S. Cartier, Kelly Tuohy, Robert Libbey, John Greenman, Jenny Bragdon and Khalan Bridges.
