HAMPDEN – Two people were taken to a hospital Thursday after an accident involving a sport utility vehicle and an 18-wheeler near Dysart’s Truck Stop and Restaurant.

“So far, they’re minor injuries,” said Deputy Peter Garland of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department.

The bright yellow Ford Escape, driven by Mary West of Sullivan, had turned right from the Dysart’s parking lot onto the Emerson Mill Road when the accident occurred Thursday afternoon.

The cause of the collision was not immediately known, Garland said. “It’s primarily driver inattention at this point,” he said. “I’m still looking for some witnesses.”

Garland would not identity the truck driver, who was driving for Patriot Transport Inc. of Hermon.

He was taken to an area hospital because of possible head injuries.

Loretta Ray, a passenger in the SUV driven by West, was taken to a hospital because of shoulder injuries .

West’s sons, Carl West, 15, and Christopher West, 14, were passengers in the SUV. Mary West said that all were wearing seat belts.

Rescue crews from Hampden, Hermon, Bangor and the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department went to the busy Dysart’s parking lot after the accident.
