Riitano lifts USM to split

STANDISH – Melissa Henderson racked up 14 strikeouts, setting a school record for strikeouts in a season (161), and Caterina Riitano hit a three-run homer to lift the University of Southern Maine softball team to a 9-1 win over Saint Joseph’s in the first game of a doubleheader. The Monks won the second game 3-2.

In the first game, the Huskies scored three runs in the fifth and five more in the seventh, powered by Riitano’s home run.

Sarah Martin and Jamie Morrison singled for Saint Joseph’s.

In the second game, Leanne Morton scored on an error in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Monks. Morrison hit a solo homer and Darcy Lee hit an RBI double.

Katie Mainville tripled for USM.

Bates sweeps Colby

At Lewiston, Kristin Masino threw a two-hitter, induced 15 groundball outs and retired the last 14 batters of the game as she pitched the Bobcats to a 1-0 win in the second game of a doubleheader. Bates also won the first game 6-1.

In the first game, Erin Foye doubled, singled and drove in a run for Bates. Katie Franklin hit two singles and added an RBI. Colby’s Wendy Bonner hit a solo homer in the second inning.

In the second game, Masino outdueled White Mules pitcher Toni-Lynn Robbins, who scattered five hits, struck out nine, walked two and gave up one unearned run.

Caitlyn Murphy scored the game’s only run when she singled, advanced on a fielder’s choice, got to third on an error, and came home on a Robbins wild pitch. Miki Starr and Alaina Clark each singled for Colby.

Thomas, Husson split

At Waterville Wednesday, Adam Sheehan drove in four runs with a double and two singles and Aaron Brideau knocked in three with three singles as Husson salvaged a split of their doubleheader with an 8-3 victory.

Thomas won the opener 2-1.

In the second game, Sheehan and Brideau had two-run singles in a four-run sixth inning that broke the game open.

Robert Webber went the distance for the win, allowing seven hits while striking out three and walking one.

Kyle Mathieu had a double and two singles for the Eagles.

Matt Pavlis hit a two-run homer for Thomas while Jordan McDonald and Russell Beckwith had a double and single apiece.

In the opener, Ryan Rulman outdueled Mike Cowperthwaite. Rulman fired a three-hitter with no walks or strikeouts. Cowperthwaite threw a seven-hitter with a strikeout and no walks.

Jim Pierce’s triple and a run-scoring groundout by Scott Brawn broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning.

Pierce had a triple and a single and Jordan Stebbins had an RBI single for Thomas.

Sean Brawn doubled and scored on an outfield error for the Husson run.

At Brunswick, Jon Koperniak led the Polar Bears with three singles, two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases.

John Lawrie also singled three times with two RBIs and had two runs scored for 14-9 Bowdoin. Chris McCann added a double and a single, while Nick Lawler had a double.

Justin Quimby singled twice for the 3-12 Beavers.
