ROCKLAND – John Coppola’s single plated David Benner with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday as Rockland outlasted Winslow 8-7 in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B baseball season opener.
Benner tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double. He also doubled and singled. Coppola finished with two singles while Dominic Morrill racked up a double and two singles and drove in three runs.
Eric Lopez paced the Black Raiders with a bases-loaded two-run double.

At Thorndike, senior right-hander Mike Mayer scattered eight hits while striking out three and walking no one to lead the host Mustangs to a season-opening victory.
Ben Ward paced the Mount View offense with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Steve Miles added three singles and Eric Eddy two singles to the Mustangs’ 10-hit attack.
Thad Hills tripled and singled for Belfast, while Zac Carr singled twice.

At Eastport, Nick Martinez hit two singles and drove home three runs to lead Shead to the win.
Derek Maloney and Cody Bulmer each singled twice for the Tigers and Jacob Stanley hit a double.
Shawn McLean hit a two-run single in the fifth inning for Calais’ only hit.

At Harrington, Thomas Buck hit a triple and a double to drive in five runs and propel Machias to the win.
Alan Austin hit a three-run double for Machias and Chase Ross singled twice.
Jeff Taylor had three singles and scored two runs for host Narraguagus and Cory Burt had a single and two RBIs.

At East Machias, Mark Fields belted a three-run homer and Nick Wood hit a two-run shot to pace Washington Academy to its win over visiting Woodland.
Fields also had a single.
James Ramsdell had a double and a single and Yung Soo Kim had two singles. Corey Colbeth, Wood and Jason Labonte teamed up on a five-inning three-hitter.
Don Phelps had a double for Woodland.

At Eastport, winning pitcher Steph Perry hit a home run, a triple and two singles to knock in seven runs and lead Calais to victory.
Perry allowed just four runs on two hits while striking out eight for the Blue Devils. Jessica Whitaker had four singles with five RBIs and Lindsey Mingo doubled twice for Calais.
Fawn Cummings hit a run scoring triple for Shead.

At Harrington, Alicia Tenney hit a home run and a single to drive in five runs and lead Narraguagus to the win.
Elise Dublin allowed just three earned runs on three hits and two walks while fanning seven for the Knights. Chelsey Baker and Becky Pilloni each had a single with three RBIs.
Christiannah Holmes hit an RBI double for Machias and Stephanie Whitman hit a run-scoring single.
