AUGUSTA – The Red Sox World Series trophy will be put on display at two public events in central Maine next month.
The 33-pound platinum, gold and silver trophy will be displayed at a hangar at the Augusta State Airport from 9 a.m. to noon on May 14. It will then be displayed at a yet undetermined location in Waterville from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Diane Peterson, director of communications at MaineGeneral Health, said the appearances are made possible through Harold Alfond, a philanthropist who lives part-time in Belgrade, and his association with the Red Sox. Two of Alfond’s adult children are minority owners of the Red Sox, she said.
MaineGeneral, which is organizing the events, is also displaying the trophy at a fund-raiser for the hospital.
The evening fund-raiser will be at the Harold Alfond Athletic Center at Colby College and feature an auction of Red Sox-related items to benefit hospital cancer programs. The event is limited to 250 people, and tickets cost $95 each.
Peterson said the hospital is hoping to get some retired Red Sox players to appear with the trophy since the season is under way and current Red Sox players wouldn’t be able to make it.
