Flamingo Flockings raise funds for breast cancer

One of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life teams, MJ’s Caps Connection, is raising money with its Flamingo Flocking “Fun” Raiser, and you can join in the fun for a most worthy cause.

MJ’s Caps Connection was formed in memory of Mary Jo Sekera of Eddington who died of breast cancer two years ago at age 47.

For a $25 donation, her friends “will lure 20 of these beautiful birds to your friend’s and family’s front lawn for 24 hours,” reports team captain Pat Tait.

I’ve seen Flamingo Flocking in Orrington and, word has it, flocks of those popular pink birds have been seen in Brewer and Bangor, as well.

To schedule a Flamingo Flocking, or for more information about Relay for Life, call Cap’s Tavern in Brewer, 989-2268, and ask for Tait or Sheldy Shiver.

Shiver said that because of the high cost of gasoline, the team is trying to keep the Flocking within a 20-mile radius of Bangor-Brewer.

Flocking will be done, however, for anyone outside that area who is willing to help out with a donation for gas.

Besides purchasing the flamingos and necessary supplies, the team is paying all additional expenses so that all proceeds will benefit ACS, Shiver explained.

The local Relay for Life event is May 20-21 at the Old Town High School track.

While we’re on the subject of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Old Town, Dan Cashman of that event’s planning committee urges you to register your team today by calling the ACS at 989-0332.

He reminds you that this “celebration of life” is a 24-hour event beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, May 20, and continuing through Saturday, May 21, at the Old Town High School track.

Relay for Life brings together former and current cancer patients, their families, businesses, civic organizations and members of the public in an athletic relay to raise funds to support the ACS.

Participants camp out at the walk site and, when not taking their turn walking, take part in activities and enjoy local entertainment.

Information about how to form a team or become involved in Relay for Life is available from the ACS by calling the above number or (800) ACS-2345 or online at www.cancer.org.

The public is invited to attend a Brown Bag Lunch at noon Wednesday, April 27, at Page Farm and Home Museum on the campus of the University of Maine in Orono.

Viola Miller of Hampden will present a tatting demonstration.

Tatting is a form of making lace with a small hand shuttle.

Charles Sias, chairman of Penobscot County Area TRIAD, invites you to learn to protect yourself against identity theft at a free Operation Identity Crisis Forum beginning at 9:30 a.m. Friday, April 29, at Spectacular Event Center, 395 Griffin Road in Bangor.

The forum is sponsored by TRIAD, the United States Postal Service, the United States Secret Service and the U. S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maine.

The event includes a free continental breakfast and a pharmaceutical drug collection of expired or unused medications.

If you plan to attend, RSVP with Jen Smith at Eastern Agency on Aging, 941-2865.

Here is a wonderful invitation for all senior citizens who love to get into some fancy or not-so-fancy duds and dance.

You are invited to attend the Senior Citizen’s Prom 2005 from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at Hampden Academy.

Amanda Clewley of the prom committee reports there is no admission charge, you will dance to music of the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s, and the event also will feature bingo.

Dress “will be formal to semiformal” she added.

Light refreshments will be provided, and “a prom king and queen will be named.”

The yearly meeting of friends and former members of the Thursday Club of the University of Maine is at noon Saturday, May 7, at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono.

Entertainment will be provided by Maine humorist Clyde Folsom.

Wives of university faculty, administrators and friends of the group, which meets once a year, are invited, but reservations must be made by Saturday, April 30, with Sally Irons at 866-3501.

The club, which dates to 1911, supports the Thursday Club Scholarship Fund of the University of Maine Foundation to benefit outstanding, upper-level, nontraditional UMaine students.
