Maine track teams victorious

The University of Maine men’s and women’s track and field teams triumphed in the Holy Cross Invitational in Worcester, Mass.

The men amassed 160 points to second-place Colgate’s 149 while the women bested the second-place host team from Holy Cross, 197-171.

Leading the way for the men were Ivi Nwosu, who was second in the 100 meters (11.24 seconds) and 200 (32.15). Scott O’Connor claimed second in the 800 (1:56.32) while Eric Libby of Hampden captured third in the 400 (50.04).

The Bears also went 1-2-3 in the 1500, led by Andy Caron (4:00.67), Paul Rupprecht (4:00.76) and Mike Lansing (4:03.85. Lansing added a first in the 5,000 (15:11.83) while Patrick Guerette took third in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:08.73)

Leading the way for the women was Silvia Scaldaferri, who won both the 200 and long jump with marks of 25.98 seconds and 5.44 meters. Caribou’s Lindsay Burlock took first in the 400 (59.14) and Hana Pelletier of Belgrade earned the top spot in the 800 (2:13.94).

UM also took the top three spots in the 100 hurdles, with Katie Souviney taking first (14.82), followed by Courtney Francis and Heather Groder.

Baseball

Bates 4, Colby 3

At Lewiston, Casey McCormick scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Bates its win over arch-rival Colby Saturday.

The teams were supposed to play a doubleheader, but the second game was postponed by rain and will be made up May 4th in Waterville.

Adam Taranto and Kyohei Yamanda each had an RBI single for Bates and Tyler Paul added a sacrifice fly.

Andy Carr paced the White Mules of Waterville with two doubles, a single and two RBIs.

Huskies drop two

At Danbury, Conn. Sunday, D.J. Mulhall’s run-scoring single in the bottom gave Western Connecticut a 9-8 win over the University of Southern Maine that capped a sweep of their doubleheader.

Western Connecticut erased an 8-0 deficit, scoring all nine runs over the final three innings.

Western Connecticut took the first game, 8-6.

In the second game, the Colonials tied it with five runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth before winning it in the ninth.

Brent Lemieux had a three-run double for USM while Ryan Bourque had an RBI double.

In the opener, Andy Powers drove in the eventual game-winner with a fielder’s choice in the seventh inning.

Chris Kaplan gave the Colonials some insurance in the eighth with an RBI double.

Bourque paced Southern Maine with a two-run homer while Joe Ganley added an RBI single.

Softball

Becker 7, UMaine-Farmington 4

At Leicester, Mass., Mariah Seames singled three times, stole three bases and drove in one run as Becker earned a win in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. The second game was rained out.

Colleen Murphy doubled and singled and stole two bases. Noelle Gleason, Becca Marks and Lindsay Hakala each had two RBIs for Becker. Gleason had two singles, Marks had a single and a double and Hakala doubled.

Megan Goodrow had an RBI double for UMF. Kristi Cochin and Mary Berry each singled twice.

At Chicopee, Mass., freshman Karyn Palomba scored the game-winning run to lift the Blazers to a rain-abbreviated win on Saturday.

Lauren Stauch singled three times for Elms. She also stole two bases and scored their first run.

Jasmine Carey had an RBI single for the Terriers.

Lacrosse

Me. Maritime 12, Emerson 1

At Boston Saturday, Jake Forgit scored four goals and two assists as the Mariners of Castine rolled and earned a berth in the North Atlantic College playoffs.

Garrett Hutchins, Nathan Bolduc, Will Hood, Dustin Weber and Patrick Jones each added a goal for MMA. Roscoe Bishop and Jones combined for nine saves..

Bill Vigne scored the lone goal for Emerson and Jeremy Powers had 22 saves.
