The MATHCOUNT Web site posts weekly questions for participants to practice their math skills. The following is a question posted April 25:
“For the 109th running of the Boston Marathon, it was reported that 20,453 runners crossed the starting line and took on the challenge of running a marathon. This is a huge number of people. If it’s estimated that the runners cross the starting line at a rate of 1,800 runners per minute, how long will it take for all 20,453 runners to cross the starting line? Express your answer in the form ‘minutes, seconds’ to the nearest second.”
The solution to the problem will be available on May 2 at www.mathcounts.org.
