News in brief AUGUSTA: JOURNEY INTO WRITING CONTEST

Thirteen high school students, including one each from Presque Isle, Searsport and Brewer, have been selected as semifinalists for the Maine Community College System’s Journey Into Writing contest. The 13 winning students were picked from 420 entries representing 103 Maine high schools and were announced this week by Gov. John Baldacci and the contest’s judges, authors Stephen and Tabitha King and Richard Russo. Amanda Osborne of Brewer is a semifinalist for her short story “Oberonn.” Tyler Francke of Presque Isle submitted a short story called “My Friend Jimmy.” Searsport student Kelly Hassapelis is in the running for her story “Nine Months in Iraq.” Three winners will be announced at a luncheon on May 26. Each will receive $2,500 and the distinction of being named as one of the governor’s Young Writers of the Year. Submissions for the contest were accepted between Oct. 1 and Dec. 1, 2004, from high school juniors or home-schooled students of comparable age and consisted of short stories, essays or poems. The contest is sponsored by the Maine Sunday Telegram and MaineToday.com, as well as U.S. Cellular and Central Maine Power. The semifinalists’ work can be viewed online at www.mccs.me.edu.
