Eagle finds career path in baseball taking shape Ham to be grad assistant for ex-Husson coach

Husson College backup first baseman Andy Ham of Lee will be a graduate assistant for former Eagles head baseball coach John Kolasinski at Siena Heights University in Adrian, Mich., next season.

“He [Kolasinski] called me up right before we left for the spring trip and offered me the opportunity,” said Ham. “Coaching is what I want to do and I thought this would be a great opportunity so I accepted it.”

The 22-year-old Ham will graduate with a degree in physical education next month and will enter a master’s program at the institution entitled “Organization and Leadership,” according to Ham.

“It gears you toward coaching or even a career as an athletic director, which is what I want to do,” said Ham.

“I’ll be going out there in the middle of the summer to help work on the field. They’re trying to renovate it some. I’ll also help out with recruiting. I’ll start coaching and classes in the fall,” Ham added.

“This is a great opportunity for him,” said Husson coach John Winkin. “I couldn’t recommend anyone more highly than Andy. He’s a class kid.”

“He has a good feel for the game and a great temperament,” added Winkin.

Winkin said he considers Ham a “player-coach” and noted that he also acts as an equipment manager.

“He is well-organized and is respected by all the kids,” said Winkin.

Alfond dedication set at Colby

The Bill Alfond Field, Colby College’s new 240- by 360-foot synthetic turf field, will be dedicated at noon Saturday in Waterville.

The field is named for Colby trustee and 1972 grad Bill Alfond, who, with his wife, Joan, made the naming gift for the field. Bill is the son of philanthropist Harold Alfond, the former owner of Dexter Shoe.

The Bill Alfond Field is the primary field for Colby field hockey and men’s and women’s lacrosse and is marked with a variety of permanent and changeable lines.

The field also serves as a practice or backup field for other college teams, for club and intramural sports, and is available to the central Maine community. The facility has lights, a scoreboard, restrooms, and spectator seating.
