ORONO – Orono Community Theatre will present “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 29-30, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at the Keith Anderson Community House on Bennoch Road. The show, directed by Margo Lukens, is a witty and buoyant comedy of manners and is often referred to as Wilde’s most perfect work.
The story, set in London in the 1890s, recounts the exploits of two young bachelors, played by Evan James and Sam Bett of Orono, as they pretend to be people they are not in order to win the hearts of two young women. The plot pivots on mistaken identities, orphans lost and found, and trays full of cucumber sandwiches.
Other cast members from Orono are Carl White and Mostapha Aghamoosa as the butlers, Hannah Cyrus and Destiny Winters as the fiancees, and Claire Ackroyd as the imposing matriarch Lady Bracknell. Ellen Vollmers of Old Town plays the governess and Terry Dubois of Milford appears as the Rev. Chasuble.
Tickets, on sale at the Orono Pharmacy and at the door, are $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors. For more information, call Orono Parks and Recreation at 866-5065.
