Boston University sweeps Black Bears

BOSTON – The University of Maine softball team was unable to rally in an America East doubleheader against Boston University on Thursday as the Terriers jumped out to two early leads and gained a 5-2, 11-5 sweep.

The Black Bears drop to fifth in America East, one spot out of conference tournament contention. Maine will play a doubleheader Friday and single game Saturday at University of Maryland Baltimore County.

In the first game, BU’s Ashlee Freeman fired a three-hitter, struck out seven and walked one to earn the win. DeKenya Williams had a double and two RBIs.

Maine’s Brittany Cheney hit a two-run double in the third, driving in Jess Brady and Dana Grimm. Sarah Bennis pitched a complete game with two strikeouts.

In the second game, Jenny Shields had 5 RBIs, including a two-run home run to lead the Terriers. BU scored five runs in the first inning, including two on an error. Liz Alley hit a two-run double.

The Black Bears scored all five of their runs in the third. Kristie Hawkins and Molly McKinney each had RBI singles, while Amy Kuhl hit two doubles.

At Newton, Mass., Stephanie Moriarty pitched a one-hitter and Mary Berry drove home Sara Martin for the game’s only run as the University of Maine-Farmington upset top-ranked Lasell in a North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal.

The Beavers move to the double-elimination semifinal round Saturday at Elms College.

UMF managed just six hits, including two by Berry, but scratched out a run off Lasell pitcher Laura Stone in the fifth inning to earn the victory.

At Gorham, Max Arsenault had an infield RBI single and Eddie Skeffington a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to lift the Huskies to the win.

The game originally was supposed to be played in Standish, but was moved to Gorham due to the wet weather.

Eddie Skeffington slammed a two-run homer while Brandon Brewer and Joe McGhee each had an RBI single for Southern Maine.

Andy Exley had an RBI single for the Monks while Andy Cieslak had a fielder’s choice RBI.
