BALTIMORE – Erin Provost blasted a home run and a single to drive in three runs and lead the University of Maine Black Bears to a 6-2 win and a split of their doubleheader with Maryland Baltimore County Friday in softball action.

UMBC won the opener 6-3.

In the first game, Dana Shepherd doubled and singled twice to bring in three runs for the Retrievers. Kristie Pickeral had a two-run double.

Brittany Cheney had a home run and a double for Maine, Povost doubled and singled, and Amy Kuhl doubled and singled for two RBIs.

In the second game, Kuhl added an RBI double for the Black Bears. Lauren Dulkis doubled for two RBIs and Sarah Bennis had two singles.

Reilly Ward doubled and singled to bring in both of Maryland Baltimore County’s runs.

At Waterville, Thomas College advanced to the North Atlantic Conference tournament semifinals with an 8-4 win over Husson College.

Joy Ireland (8-5) pitched a five-hitter while notching six strikeouts for the 19-3 Terriers. Freshman Kim Denbow hit three singles with one RBI, and Kayla Beaudoin had two singles and two RBIs.

Carolyn McAvoy led 17-14 Husson with three singles and one RBI.

Southern Maine takes two

At Gorham, Melissa Henderson earned her 14th win of the season in the first game and came in for the save in the second to lead the Huskies to a sweep of Bowdoin. They won the first game 2-1 and the second 3-2.

In the first game, Caterina Riitano singled twice with an RBI for Southern Maine. Kim Lipman also had two singles and Evon Hudspeth doubled.

Danielle Chagnon tripled and doubled, driving in the only run for Bowdoin.

In the second game, Christen Lachapelle singled and doubled for one RBI, while Riitano had an RBI single.

Katie Nielson had an RBI single for the Polar Bears.

At Waterville, Jim O’Leary doubled, singled, and homered to bring in three runs and lead Tufts to victory.

Bryan McDavit added a double and two singles, while Bobby Kenny doubled and singled for three RBI. Kyle Backstrom singled twice for two RBIs and scored three runs for the Jumbos.

Tyler Hales had an RBI triple and two singles for the White Mules. Brian Liberty doubled once and singled twice. Nick Spillane also had three singles.

At Standish, a second-inning grand slam from Luke Enman lifted the Monks to victory.

Enman also had a two-run homer in the seventh. Andrew Wood singled three times for St. Joe’s. Mark Clapp and Brian School each added two singles, while Andy Exley had a double.

Kevin Moyer doubled and Mike Crawford singled for the Raiders.

At Lewiston, Jon Koperniak popped a two-run home run over the fence in left field to break a 1-1 tie for the Polar Bears.

Chris Bucci singled twice to bring in the other run and Pat Duchette singled two more times.

Charlie Engasser had two singles and knocked in the Bobcats’ only run. Alex Maulucci also had two singles.
