BANGOR – Just two games into its season, the Brewer High softball team has already showed what happens when the Witches score early and often.
Brewer scored three runs in the first inning for the second game in a row and complemented an 11-hit offense with another strong pitching performance for a 7-0 victory over rival Bangor Saturday at the Bangor High field.
Sophomore Jordan McLain pitched a three-hitter for the 2-0 defending Eastern Maine Class A champion Witches, who have racked up 18 hits in two games. Ten of Saturday’s hits were singles. Brewer also had three sacrifice bunts Saturday, two of which helped score runs.
The Witches got to Bangor ace Kelly White early. She went just one-third of an inning after giving up three runs, five hits, and a walk.
“She hasn’t pitched a ton in the preseason, so I think coming out against a really tough team is a challenge for her,” Rams coach Nancy Snowdeal said.
Although Bangor freshman Amy Wadleigh pitched well in relief, the Witches continued to hit and move runners, adding one run each in the third and fourth innings and two more in the seventh.
McLain got things started for Brewer in the first with a single to right field. She advanced to second on a Sarah DeFilipp groundout and then scored on Christine Thoms’ double to right-center. Anna Corey then beat out an infield single, putting Thoms at third, and Thoms came home on Becca York’s line drive to right.
Corey had stolen second before York’s single, which put her into scoring position for Kate Hanlon after White gave up a walk to Sarah Risser.
Hanlon singled to left-center, plating Corey for the third run. Wadleigh then entered the game and got a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning.
“We always try to come out hard to get things going and if we can get a lead, we know we can’t let down at all,” said Hanlon, who tallied another RBI in the third inning when she laid down a sacrifice bunt to score York from third base.
Thoms singled and scored on an error on the fourth. Katie Quimby had an RBI in the seventh when her groundout plated pinch runner Stacy Gomm from third base. Hanlon reached on an error and eventually scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.
“We’ve worked a lot on [playing] one base at a time, one hit at a time, one pitch at a time,” Corey said. “It’s really helped us to string things together. It worked today.”
Tawyna Godinez hit two singles for Bangor (1-1) and Kate Turner added one.
Godinez and Emily Heath (walk) were at second and third, respectively, with two outs in the third inning for Bangor’s biggest threat in the game. But McLain induced a groundout to end the inning.
“A lot of pitches were working and the defense did a good job making plays,” said McLain, who struck out five and walked three.
The Rams also had a runner thrown out on a steal attempt and a sacrifice bunt attempt that popped up for an easy out.
“Those things happen in games like this,” Snowdeal said. “We have to hit better. That’s the bottom line.”
