BALTIMORE – Amy Kuhl’s third hit of the day, a single in the top of the ninth, scored Jess Brady with the winning run to give the University of Maine a 7-6 softball win over University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Brady hit a solo homer in the first and singled twice to pace the Bears. Kuhl had two singles and a double. Sarah Bennis allowed seven hits over nine innings to notch the win. Maine is now tied for third in America East with a 9-7 conference record.

In the ninth, Brady singled to lead off the inning, stole second, went to third on a bunt, and scored on Kuhl’s hit.

Reilly Ward hit two home runs and singled to drive in three runs for the Retrievers.

UMBC tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

At Standish Saturday, Megan Rodgers tripled to drive in one run in the Polar Bears victory.

Rachel Gordon added an RBI double to the win.

Tufts takes two

At Medford Saturday, Julia Brenta pitched a two-hitter to help the Jumbos take the first game 4-0 and Courtney Bongiolatti hit two home runs to help them win the second game 6-1.

In the first game, Brenta pitched her second career shutout, striking out seven. Megan Cusick knocked out a two run double in the bottom of the sixth to secure Tuft’s lead.

In the second game, Danielle Lopez went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to go along with Bongiolatti’s three RBI.

Mollie Puskar led of the fifth with a double for the White Mules and then scored their only run on a sacrifice fly.

Keene State sweeps USM

At Gorham on Saturday, Meghan McLaughlin fired a three-hitter over nine innings and Ashlee Nicholson pitched a two-hit shutout to lead the Keene State Owls to a 4-1 win in the first game and an 11-0 win in the nightcap.

In the first game, McLaughlin struck out 13 batters and walked three. Jenn Norman had three singles and Melissa Scrata had an RBI double for Keene State.

Laura Pratt batted in one run for the Huskies.

In the second game, Scata drove in three runs for the Owls. Liz Mroczka doubled and singled for two RBI, while Conklin singled twice for another two RBIs.

Colby sweeps St. Joseph’s

At Waterville, Lindsey Toomey pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out four to help lead Colby College to the 2-0 win over Saint Joseph’s in the first game on Sunday. Colby also took the second 5-2.

In the first game, Miki Starr had an RBI single for Colby and Wendy Bonner added an RBI ground out. Elizabeth Riley hit a double.

In the second game, Alaina Clark hit a two-run double for Colby and Amanda Roehn had an RBI single. Starr had two singles and an RBI. Shannon Emerson doubled and scored.

Elms advances to NAC final

At Chicopee, Mass., Elms College junior Kristi Guzzo threw consecutive shutouts (both 1-0 victories) over University of Maine-Farmington and No. 2 Thomas College to advance to the North Atlantic Conference final.

Thomas and the UMF Beavers will play Saturday at noon with the winner advancing to play Elms at 2 p.m. for the championship.

In Sunday’s first game, pinch hitter Lauren Mahler’s RBI groundout in the fourth scored the only run of the game.

UMF pitcher Stephanie Moriarty pitched a three-hitter and allowed no runs. Guzzo’s line was the same.

In Sunday’s final game, Guzzo (19-4) pitched a one-hitter and notched eight strikeouts to lead Elms into the finals.

Jen LeDoux’s RBI single in the first scored Guzzo with the only run of the game.

In game two, Thomas scored all three runs in the sixth and Joy Ireland of Clinton gave up just three hits while striking out 11 batters to notch the 3-0 win over Becker.

Nicole Smith of Bucksport and Jen Couture of Waterboro each singled twice for Thoma. Couture had two RBIs and Smith had one.

In game three, the UMF Beavers roared back from a two-run deficit with five runs in the seventh for a 7-3 victory over Becker.

Cynthia Ravinski had two doubles, a single and one RBI to lead the Beavers. Mary Berry had a double and a single while Kristi Cochin added two singles. Meagen Carman notched the win with four innings of two-hit scoreless relief.

Huskies sweep Eastern Conn.

At Willamantic, Conn., Caterina Riitano drove in three runs in each game Sunday to lead the Huskies to a 4-1 opening win and a 2-1 nightcap win.

In the first game, Melissa Henderson scattered three hits over seven innings with nine strikeouts and no walks. Riitino hit two RBI singles while Christen Lachapelle had two singles and a double for one RBI. Kim Lippman doubled and singled.

Karen Taber had a run scoring double for the Warriors.

In the second game, Katie Mainville fired her second career shutout, striking out 13. Riitano belted a home run and a double. Lachapelle had and RBI single and Lipman singled twice for Southern Maine.

Baseball

Southern Maine, Plymouth split

At Gorham, Brent Lemieux had four singles and two RBIs in the first game and three more singles in the second game for the University of Southern Maine. The Huskies took the first game 12-7 but dropped the second game against Plymouth State 3-2.

In the first game, Nick Vardaro and Eddie Skeffington each had a home run and a single with two RBIs for Southern Maine. Max Arsenault also homered and Joe McGhee had four singles and an RBI.

PSU’s C.J. Rousseau doubled and singled for two RBIs.

In the second game, Matt Gabellieri hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to lift Plymouth State to the win. Derek Guimond doubled and singled.

Skeffington hit two singles for the Huskies.

Tufts sweeps Colby

At Waterville, Tufts University scored four runs in the top of the seventh without the benefit of a hit to take a 10-8 win in the second game of a doubleheader. The Jumbos also won the first game 22-0.

In the first game, Jim O’Leary and Kyle Backstrom each homered for Tufts.

Greg Ortiz doubled for Colby College.

In the second game, Tufts scored four runs in the seventh on two walk, two hit by pitches, and an error to take the win.

Tyler Hales tripled and homered for Colby and Andy Carr hit a double.

Monks sweep UM-Farmington

At Mahaney Diamond in Standish Sunday, the Saint Joseph’s College Monks got solid pitching in both games and swept a doubleheader from the University of Maine-Farmington with a 22-1 win in the first game and a 7-2 victory in the second.

In the second game, Miles Johnson allowed four hits and one earned run in five innings to notch the win. Luke Enman doubled, singled, and had an RBI for the Monks.

Matt Bray’s solo home run was the highlight for UMF.

In the first game, Steve Lambert pitched a three-hitter while striking out five batters and walking one for the win.

Charlie Furbush hit a home run, doubled, and drove in four runs to lead the Monks. Mark Clapp doubled and singled for one RBI and Andy Exley singled twice.

Justin Quimby led the UMF Beavers with two singles.

St. Joseph’s sweeps Thomas

At Standish Saturday, Andy Exley hit a home run, double, and a single to drive in three runs and help lead Saint Joseph’s College to the 9-4 win in the second game. The Monks shut out Thomas College in the first game 4-0.

In the first game, Exley hit a solo home run for Saint Joseph’s and Aaron Cieslak had three singles with an RBI. Charlie Furbush had a double and a single and Luke Enman added two singles with an RBI.

Jim Pierce, Scott Brawn, Tim Mercier, and Jordan Stebbins each had singles.

In the second game, Cieslak hit a solo home run for the Monks and Enman doubled and singled with an RBI. Derek McIntosh and Furbush each had two singles with an RBI.

Brandon Connors hit a home run and a single to drive in four runs for Thomas and Matt Pavlis had two singles.

Becker sweeps UM-Farmington

At Farmington, Kevin Renaud hit a home run and a single to force in three runs and help lead Becker College to an 8-0 win over the University of Maine at Farmington in Saturday’s second game. Becker also won the first game 3-2.

In the first game, Michael Weckwerth and Cory Shepherd each doubled for Becker.

Devin Gill had an RBI single for UM-Farmington and Corey Provencher added a single.

In the second game, Jim Bombard and Devin Caron both hit a home run and a single for Becker. Keith Renaud doubled and singled.

Provencher hit a double for UM-Farmington.
