Plans are under way for the second annual Area Wide Yard Sale sponsored by the Northern Katahdin Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, scheduled for May 20-22, reports Ava Joy.

People who want to participate and to be included on the map provided by the NKVRCC must have their entries in by Tuesday, May 10.

Last year there were 45 sale locations in Oakfield, Smyrna, Island Falls, Sherman, Stacyville and Moro, Joy said.

She pointed out that “all sale locations will be listed on the map, with directions to sales, the days and hours they will be open, and some of the items for sale.”

The maps will be available at local stores and banks. Joy suggested people check out the maps before they head out because some of the sales are for only one or two days and sale hours may differ. To be included on the map, you must obtain and mail in forms to NKVRCC, P.O. Box 374 Island Falls 04747.

For more information, call 463-2077 or 463-2816.

Now through Sunday, May 15, if you have occasion to be in Bangor and choose to stay at the Days Inn, you can help Habitat for Humanity.

Days Inn of Bangor manager Christina Thibodeau has announced that it is participating in the second annual “Hospitality for Habitat” program of the Maine Innkeepers Association.

During this period, Days Inn of Bangor has five rooms set aside for guests, at half the regular rate, for a one- or two-night stay.

In return for that rate, guests present a tax-deductible check for $25 made out to Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization of volunteers who help build affordable houses with Habitat for Humanity partnership families.

Reservations for these rooms must be made in advance, and the donation must be in the form of a check.

For more information, visit www.the.daysinn.com/bangor06298 for a virtual tour of the inn, description of available rooms and rates for this program.

According to the Habitat for Humanity Web site, www.habitat.org, the group broke ground for its 200,000th home in March.

When completed in August, the home will house the 1 millionth person since the program began 30 years ago.

“Celebrating our 50th Anniversary” is the theme of the Millinocket Regional Hospital Auxiliary Fashion Show and Basket Auction at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, at St. Martin’s Parish Center.

Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased from any auxiliary member or at the door.

Auxiliary president Joyce Given reports models from the hospital, auxiliary, local schools and area communities will wear fashions from Gracie’s Aunt’s Closet Resale Boutique, Miller’s Department Store and Pretty Woman of Orono.

Local artist have handcrafted baskets that are filled with “good things” to be auctioned during the show and, Given wrote, “one of the baskets will be full of Red Hat Society items.”

All proceeds benefit Auxiliary projects and scholarships.

The Penobscot Historical Society needs some very special help.

Audrey Peasley wrote the society is seeking dress forms, mannequins and wigs and forms for a display at the society’s historical farm.

If you can help, call Peasley at 326-8864, or write her at 10 Ferry Road, Brooksville 04617.

Alice Gregory of Westfield celebrates her 90th birthday on Sunday, May 15.

A resident of that Aroostook County community for 80 years, she worked for the Cooperative Extension office and at Grant’s in Presque Isle.

Gregory still drives to her appointments and is known for her crocheting and knitting, especially the mittens she makes that keep lots of hands warm in the winter.

A shower of cards would make her 90th birthday extra special.

You can send your greetings to her at P.O. Box 111, Westfield 04787.
