ROCKLAND – The city’s fire chief warned Monday of a fund-raising scam seeking donations for the “Fire Department Charity.”

Fire Chief Charles Jordan Jr. said “we know of no such campaign under way that is officially sanctioned by the city of Rockland Fire Department or any other official group representing the city of Rockland.”

“We just wanted to nip it in the bud,” Jordan said, stressing that the only valid fund-raising activity in progress is by city officials, who are soliciting donations for the replacement of the Fire Department’s defunct ladder truck.

The only people involved in the sanctioned solicitations are Jordan, City Manager Tom Hall, city councilors and attorney Barry M. Faber. They are seeking donations via official city letterhead and personal follow-up visits.

Any residents or business owners solicited by telephone or by people other than those mentioned above should contact the Fire Department at 594-0318 or Rockland police at 594-0316.
