Moriarty lifts UMF into NAC title game

WATERVILLE – Stephanie Moriarty allowed only one run on two hits and three walks while striking out 10 to lead the UMaine-Farmington softball team to a 3-1 win over Thomas in the North Atlantic Conference semifinals Thursday.

The Beavers gained a berth in the NAC final against Elms College Saturday.

Mary Berry tripled and singled and scored two runs for UM-Farmington. Brandi Rideout doubled with an RBI and Megan Goodrow had a single with an RBI.

Kayla Beaudoin and Nicole Smith each singled for the Terriers and Jasmine Carey scored a run in the first inning.

Southern Maine splits

At Providence, RI, senior Melissa Henderson allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out 10 to earn the 1-0 shutout win over No. 5 Eastern Connecticut State University in the Little East Conference Tournament. No. 4 University of Southern Maine dropped the second game 2-1 to No. 1 Rhode Island College.

The Huskies will play Plymouth State, which lost its first game in the tournament, on Friday at noon.

In the first game, Danica Martin hit an RBI fielder’s choice to knock in the winning run for the Huskies. Kristin McGovern scored the run.

Nikki Vachon and Samantha Morrow each doubled for Eastern Connecticut.

In the second game, Christie Lotti and Krystal Bilek each hit an RBI double for Rhode Island. Heidi Eichler scattered four hits over seven innings with no walks and struck out seven.

Evon Hudspeth hit an RBI double in the fifth inning for Southern Maine.

Babson 8, Southern Maine 7

At Babson Park, Mass., the Beavers plated five runs in the bottom of the ninth to edge the Huskies of Gorham.

Billy Schmitt’s two-run single capped the rally and gave Babson the victory. Jay Verrill added two doubles and a single.

Joe McGhee hit a solo homer to pace Southern Maine and Brent Lemieux knocked a two-run single.
