Warren Center sale seeks volunteers, donations

Donations, volunteers and business sponsors are being requested for the Warren Center For Communication & Learning third annual yard sale to benefit its Voices to be Heard program.

That sale is 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 28, at the Warren Center parking lot, 175 Union St. in Bangor.

Items needed include clean, undamaged yard-sale goods, except for clothing.

Donations can be dropped off during regular business hours, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by appointment Saturday mornings by calling 941-2850.

Voices to be Heard teaches the deaf how to listen and speak with the aid of an amplification device such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant, and is the first auditory-oral program in Maine.

Dan Cashman of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Old Town committee reports radio station Z107.3 FM and All Hit Videos is hosting a Teen Video Dance to benefit Relay for Life from 7:30 to 10:30 tonight at the Old Town Knights of Columbus Hall.

The Knights donated the facility, and DJ Chuck Foster will donate a portion of his fee to Relay for Life, which is May 20-21 at the Old Town High School track.

Admission for teens is $5 for the fund-raiser, which features raffles and door prizes.

Volunteers with rakes and gloves are needed for spring cleanup day 2005 for Woodlawn Museum beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at the museum, Route 172 in Ellsworth.

Led by employees of the Ellsworth Hannaford, leaves and debris will be raked and removed from the lawns of the historic site. A complimentary lunch will be offered all volunteers.

Also, admission for Mom is free on Mother’s Day, and half-price for all other Mainers during May, so plan to tour Woodlawn Museum from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 8, and enjoy the newly cleaned lawns.

If you wish, you can have your own picnic on the grounds, using the museum’s new picnic tables and, for mothers only, receive an extra 20 percent discount in the museum shop. For more information, call 667-8671.

The final fund-raiser for the year for Brewer High School Project Graduation 2005 is a Hodge Podge Bingo.

Committee member Sandi Macomber reports doors open for this event at 11 a.m. and bingo starts at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Brewer Eagles Club, 22 Atlantic Ave.

Macomber said the bingo features 15 regular games for $10 and “two extra cover-alls.”

Many different companies will be represented in the prize offerings, including Longaberger Baskets, Creative Memories and Pampered Chef.

“Each game will offer something different,” for players to win, Macomber said.

Charles Kadyk, director of orchestras for the Bangor School Department, invites you to attend the Maine Chapter of the American String Teacher Association and the National School Orchestra Association 34th annual Statewide String Festival.

The concert, which is open to the public, is 4 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Bangor High School gymnasium on Broadway.

Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for students and seniors, or $5 for families.

The student festival, open to all string students in Maine and beyond, Kadyk wrote, includes more than 200 students, age 7 and up, participating in one of five string orchestras.

“They arrive in the morning; rehearse with top-notch teachers and conductors; and perform a concert, all in the same day,” he wrote.

Kadyk urges you to “come see some of the best and brightest young string players in this string-playing extravaganza.”

President Anne Crowley and members of the Carmel Firemen Auxiliary are hosting another fund-raiser for that organization.

A baked ham supper is 4:30-6 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at Golden Harvest Grange Hall.

Admission is by donation for the meal that features gingerbread with whipped cream for dessert.

More information about the auxiliary and its activities can be obtained by calling Crowley at 848-3877.

According to George Fowler, Blue Hill is the site of the longest-running contradance in Maine, and you’re invited to participate.

The regular monthly contradance with caller Bill Olson and The Eastern Trio is 8-11:30 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at Blue Hill Town Hall.

Admission is $6, which, Fowler said, just about covers the expenses of this fun evening out for all who attend.
