Pittsfield teacher Mary Chelberg recently led her middle school problem solvers team to the second-place slot in the Maine state competition and is now trying to raise $5,000 to take the four-member team to the International Problem Solvers Competition in Kentucky. The team consists of seventh- and eighth-grade students Emily Schanck, Calvin “CJ” Kersbergen, Bradley Chelberg and Kevin Booth. Mary Chelberg, a science teacher at Maine Central Institute, has coached the team for two years as a volunteer, meeting during the pupils’ lunch or recess periods once or twice a week. Chelberg said Friday that teams from Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Korea, as well as 45 states will attend the competition. Only 3 percent of the more than 50,000 pupils who participate in regional problem solvers competitions receive an invitation to the international event, which will be held June 2-5 at the University of Kentucky. “We are planning to fly to the event, and I am planning to raise $5,000,” Chelberg said. “We already have a combined commitment from Warsaw and other individuals totaling $1,000.” Upcoming fund-raisers will be a bake sale at Bud’s Shop ‘n Save in Pittsfield from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. today and a bottle drive from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 21. Individual donations of money may be dropped off at Warsaw Middle School on School Street.
