CHICOPEE, Mass. – University of Maine-Farmington sophomore pitcher Stephanie Moriarty earned a pair of victories and was named tournament most valuable player as she led the No. 4 Beavers to a pair of upset victories over No. 1 Elms on Sunday for the North Atlantic Conference championship.

UMF won the opener 2-1 and the second game 9-8 to win the NAC title.

In the first game, Sara Martin and Kelly McDonough both singled twice for one RBI for the winners. Mary Berry doubled and singled, while Hilly Tripp had two singles for the Beavers.

In the second game, Cynthia Ravinski had a two-run double and Megan McCrum had an RBI double in the top of ninth to propel UMF to the win. McCrum ended with two RBI doubles.

Megan Goodrow chipped in with three singles and a double for one RBI. Brandi Rideout doubled and singled to bring in two runs. Berry singled three times and Kristi Cochin had two.

Lauren Stauch, Christina Ciampetruzzi and Michelle Leines each singled twice for the Blazers. Meagan Ahrens also had a single and two RBI.

Southern Maine earns sweep

At Gorham on Sunday, Southern Maine pitchers allowed only four runs and 11 hits overall while sweeping UMass Dartmouth by scores of 3-1 and 6-3 in Little East Conference play at Towers Field.

In Game 1, three pitchers combined on a five-hitter for the Huskies, now 9-5 in conference action. Erik Kent pitched three hitless innings in relief to earn the win.

Max Arsenault paced USM with a double and a single. Joe McGhee and Andrew Portwine posted run-scoring singles.

Jeremy Robidoux singled twice for the Corsairs, 4-10 in the LEC.

In Game 2, Kyle Fecteau allowed one earned run and four hits in seven innings for USM.

Brent Lemieux led the Huskies with three singles, Nick Vardaro doubled and single and Joe Ganley singled twice.

Kevin Narey had two singles for UMass Dartmouth.

UM’s Lansing wins two events

At Vestal, N.Y., Mike Lansing of the University of Maine won the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000 meters to lead the Black Bear men to a fifth-place finish at the America East Championships.

Lansing, a senior from Lovell, won the steeplechase Saturday in 9 minutes, 3.09 seconds, qualifying for the NCAA Regionals. On Sunday, he took the 5,000 in 15:02.84.

Scott O’Connor was second in the 800 (1:54.37) and Waterville’s Troy Irvine finished second in the decathlon (5,813 points), winning three events. The Bears’ 4×800 relay squad of also took second in 7:40.56.

The UMaine women finished sixth in the meet, paced by Hana Pelletier of Belgrade, who Sunday won the 800 meters (2:12.57) for the second straight year. Erin Hatch of Saco took first in the high jump, clearing 1.58 meters.

Kathryn Souviney of East Vassalboro placed second in the 100-meter hurdles Sunday in 14.20 seconds after she placed third in Saturday’s javelin competition at 36.09 meters.

The Black Bears also finished second in the 4×800 relay in 9:31.38 on Sunday.

USM’s Bunker sets school record

At Springfield, Mass., Mike Bunker of Bucksport established a University of Southern Maine record Saturday by completing the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9 minutes, 19.64 seconds at the New England Division III Championships.

Bunker, who qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships, finished third in the event. The Gorham-based Huskies finished tied for 17th among 26 teams.

USM third at New Englands

At Bates College in Lewiston, the University of Southern Maine finished third among 27 teams at the New England Division III Championships.

Sara Marzouk led USM, winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a school-record time of 11:33.0. Kim Brewer scored in three events, including third in the 200 meters (26.2 seconds) and fourth in the triple jump (10.68 meters).

Melissa Bellemore was second in the pole vault (3.30 meters) and the 4×100 relay squad also took second (51.7).
