The Bangor-Brewer Fourth of July Corp. is sponsoring a carnival on the Bangor Waterfront May 11-15, which should be fun for everyone.

Featuring Smokey’s Greater Shows, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary year, gates open at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, and Thursday, May 12; noon Friday, May 13; 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14; and noon Sunday, May 15, along the banks of the Penobscot River in Bangor.

Angelia Levesque, new chairwoman of the Bangor-Brewer Fourth of July Corp., which makes all the arrangements for this special day, reports carnival admission is free, and that attendees only purchase tickets for the rides.

However, she added, Friday is “a special day for children,” because kiddie rides will be 50 cents in celebration of Smokey’s 50th anniversary.

“Fried dough, french fries and all the usual carnival goodies will be there,” she wrote, and, in addition to the rides for the youngsters, there will be a bounce house and various games “as well as rides for the older, and more daring, crowd.”

She does want you to know, however, “the carnival will close, depending on crowds and weather.”

Levesque added that the group is still seeking “any and all donations available” to help fund the July Fourth celebration, especially since “the cost of the fireworks has greatly increased this year.”

Anyone interested in participating in the Bangor-Brewer Fourth of July Parade should call Doug Damon at 942-6310.

Sue Hart of Bangor will be the guest speaker for the Orono Health Association annual meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, at Church of Universal Fellowship on Main Street in Orono.

The agenda includes reports on the year’s activities and election of officers for the year. All Orono residents are invited to attend.

Hart will discuss the Chemo Angels and Senior Angels programs.

Founded in California, the purpose of the programs is to brighten the lives of people with cancer, and those residing in nursing homes.

For more information about OHA and its activities, call President Ann Devoe at 866-4536.

Brewer High School seniors Chad Szylvian, Khalan Bridges, Megan Fraser and junior Melanie Moore will star in the Brewer Youth Theatre presentation of “Grease.”

Showtime is 7 p.m. May 12-14 and May 17-19 at Brewer Middle School, 5 Somerset St.

A play “the students have wanted to do for some time,” Rich Kimball wrote, “they’ve really put a tremendous amount of energy and enthusiasm into it.”

This movie classic drew “a lot of new faces” to the production, “and it’s exciting to see a number of students make their BYT debut,” he added.

Tickets at the door are $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Kimball cautions readers that the production includes “some mature subject mater, and may not be suitable for younger audiences.”
